metering the hogdon clays

I really really likes Hogdon clays. It's a clean burning powder and does really well in my 45acp and 38 spl. I've tried to meter in my lee turret and can't get the darn thing to meter right for me. I am trying to meter 4.0 grains and I can't. I get either 3.7, 4.1 using the disks. I tried my adjustable lee metering bar but can;t get it to drop constant charges.

I can drop constant charges in my lyman 55 but I want to speed things up a bit

Is there really a difference between 4.0 and 4.1g? You could always put a sticky dot or part of a sticky dot in the disc.

Clays has always metered with incredible consistency out of my lee pro auto disk an Dillon powder measures. Check your set up and technique for problems/inconsistencies.

same for me. Its super consistent out of my pro auto disk, perfect powder measure and rcbs uniflow.

I don't have a Lee, but I do have a Dillon. I also use straight clays. What I did was get a black pvc pipe and put a white cap on the end (didn't glue it). The pipe is a foot long. I put that in the powder hopper for a more consistent pressure on the powder. I now get fairly consistent throws. If you your powder hopper is shorter just shorten the pvc to your needs and toss in a couple of bullets in the pvc pipe.

If this doesn't work your only out a few bucks.

what powder measure are you using?

I am using the same lee pro auto and my experience is not the same. With certain powders I get what the chart indicates but not with certain powders like clays... i get a variance of 2 - 3 tenths more or less.

Try going back to the lee auto disks. The metering bar does not do as well with smaller charges like clays. Lee auto disk setting for 4.2 grains of clays is .61 for 3.9 grains of clays the disk setting is .57

When I used my lee pro auto disk the .57 cavity threw a very consistent 3.7gr charge. Perfect for making a mild recoiling and very accurate round that still makes major under a 230gr cast bullet.

Wish they had one right in the middle... 3.7 foes not cycle my g30 properly using 200gr rn plated. No problem cycling that using 4.2...
My 1911 cycles just fine using 3.7

I read in another forum to make sure your powder hopper is at least 1/2 full, for better powder throws with the clays and 700-x, which I both use extensively and have had problems in the past with inaccurate weights. I never put more than a third full in my hopper, because I rarely load more than 100 rnds at a time.
