So I found some of this stuff and was wondering if its any good? I got it for my 45/70 cause I was gonna do some cowboy loads. But I can't seem to find any data. Is it worth keeping?

Didn't know it was for reduced loads. Poop. I'm gonna research a little more. I like my IMR 4895 loads. How much reduction we talking about??Good friends will come bail you out of jail. A best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying damn that was fun!Comment

Like you may be able to get 1000-1100 fps with a 405gr cast bullet. Very mild recoil, though. I think I used 11 or 12 gr. with said bullet.Comment

Trail Boss is the duct tape of gunpowder. It seems I have seen Trail Boss recipes for almost every cartridge known to man.Comment

Works great for cowboy loads. Go to this IMR document to see how to get your max and starting loads based on available case capacity:

A cartridge full of TB behind a 440 gr. lead unchecked boolit is the softest load I have for my 500 S&W. It's the only one where I can unload the whole cylinder with one hand DA rapid fire.
Great stuff.Last edited by Swagman00; 08-28-2013, 7:48 PM.Anyway...here's a dearth of reasoning to ponder: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Guns

I use 10 grains of TB with a 270 SAA cast boolit in my 460 mag xvr and get right around 1000 fps. It is nice and soft. I use it for practicing my double action shooting.
In a 30-06 bolt gun, TB will push a 150 JSP at 1200 fps. It is slower than the Red Dot 13.0 load that is called "the load."
In 45 colt it was very wimpy, especially fired from the x frame. I just run red dot for 45 colt.
The thing about the 460 or 45/70 and other huge cartridges, is that powders like red dot are not even listed for light loads. You could probably fit 10 times the amount of red dot you need, in a 45 colt case.
For 460 mag I also use A5744 for mid loads. It will push a bullet to high velocities, but a bit shy of a full power load from 296/110, but it can also be downloaded. It is rated for about 2000 fps with a 240 bullet in 460, but I use 38.0 grains of 5744 and get 1400 or so fps. It still kicks and sounds like at least a 44 mag, but it is tame compared to 296. 5744 is for reduced rifle loads and you might find data for 45/70 on Accurate's web site.
Trail boss seems to be more accurate at less than a full charge. A full charge is a case that is filled to the bottom of the seated bullet but not compressed. It works fine with jacketed and is great for cast bullets. He who dies with the most tools/toys wins

Trail boss was made for cowboy loads. It should work great for 45-70. Depending on bullet weight, it should be going around 900-1200 fps. I just picked up a ruger #1 in 45-70 and plan on loading some plinking rounds with trail boss and 400gr. home cast.
I use a case full of trail boss under a 300gr cast bullet for 45 colt. Shooting it out of my lever action, it kicks like a .22Comment

I started my son on mouse fart 308 loads using TB. Where he didn't want to step up to the plate with my Varget mid loads, the TB got him in the drivers seat. -gIf ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.
