    Cant figure it out.

So ive got a 1976 Ruger M77 in 7mm Rem Mag. I noticed that factory loads chamber perfectly. Bolt locks super smooth. Also i reload some ammo for a Browning A-bolt that is smooth as hell with whatever i throw in it. Now the problem is, some brass that gets shot in the Browning doesnt work so well in the Ruger. sometimes it is really hard to lock the bolt down. and sometimes it is smooth and sometimes it will not close at all. Whats going on? I use some older RCBS dies on a single stage press. my guess is that it is the shoulders on the brass. How do i get rid of this problem?

Screw the sizing die in a little at a time until the brass fits your Remmy. The problem is that the chamber in your Browning is larger than the Remington's.

By adjusting your dies correctly and by lining the inside of the necks with Imperial.

All brass doesn't expand and retract at the same rate, and most brass will harden over time with resizing so the same brass my change over time.

Ruger and Browning don't use the same size reamers to bore out the chamber. If your going to swap brass between the two, you're going to have to resize down to SAAMI spec. Or resize down to the size of the smaller camber of the two. Including shoulder datum location and neck length.

If you don't lube the inside of the necks, the expander ball will pull the shoulder you just bumped with rhe sizing die forward, ruining your effort. Then the round won't wanna chamber.

Set your dies to touch the shell holder on the up stroke of the ram add 1/4-1/2 turn to make up for press stretch , size go shooting.

^ what he said. Your press should cam over at the bottom of the stroke.

Hey guys, thanks! This worked awsome. I was thinking i needed to get new dies, was contemplating selling my Ruger, but all is well. I will no longer have to cycle the brass in my ruger to see which pieces fit and which ones don't. Doing that was such a PITA!

The belted magnums head space on the belt, not the shoulder, so you will always want to adjust the FL sizing die to cam over against the shell holder. When ammo is being used for multiple rifles with standard SAMMI chambers, this is the method to use.

The exception is when setting up ammunition for a particular rifle with a precision chamber to head space on the shoulder for accuracy. In this instance a technique is used to reform the cases to precisely fit that chamber. This renders the cases suitable only for use in that rifle. Such cases will likely not chamber easily in a standard SAMMI chamber.
