Tumbled brass for the first time, what did I do wrong?

Aren't they supposed to br shiny?

Used corn cobb media and Dillon polishing and tumbled for 2 hours originally and then 8 hours.

Looks like the brass has some tar like residue before you tumbled? I use crushed walnut and my brass comes out shiny, but my brass never had the black stuff on it to before i threw them in the tumbler.

There was nothing on the brass before tumbling and the black comes right off if rubbed.

Did you let the polish run with just the media in the tumbler for a while before placing the brass in? If not, that may be the reason.

          No I did not, Doh.

Should I just wipe off the brass and tumble again?

I would just let it tumble for another couple hours. It should come off if that is all that it is.

Nevermind..just saw that you let it go 8 hours. Not sure then.

I ran into the same issue when I didn't remove the resizing lube from cases before tumbling. Excess will cause media clumping.

It never looked as bad as THAT though.

Did you mix anything else in other then the polish with the media?
Anyway...here's a dearth of reasoning to ponder: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Guns

How much polish did you add? Gotta be too much polish or contaminated media. I just squirt a tiny amount of polish and tumble for 45 minutes to an hour which is good enough for me. After 10 hours I would think they would sparkle.

                  Way too much polish.

This is a dry tumbling process.

Why does the media look black?

First I tumbled for 2 hours and there were slight black marks on the brass that were not there when I put it in the tumbler. I decided to tumble over night and the black specs turned into almost entire black brass lol.

How much media did you use? Was it more brass than media or vice versa?

It looks as though there may have been something in the bottom of your tumbler or the media was contaminated somehow.

Dump the media, inspect the tumbler and use new media - dry. The polish does nothing for the actual cleaning. It's just for appearance.

Remove brass. Throw a few dryer sheets in and tumble for an hour or until clean. Remove sheets after clean. Re tumble brass.
