    Dillon Dies and 30 Carbine

I ordered a set of Dillon carbide dies for 30 carbine. It's a three die set: sizer/deprimer, seater, crimper. Why no expander? How am I supposed to start the bullet?

I looked through the Dillon website without luck. I'll call tomorrow unless someone here can explain it.

I guess I must be missing something...either a die or my mind.

The expanding if needed is done with the powder funnel that comes with the conversion kit for your press that goes inside the dillon powder measure.

OK, that explains it. I don't have a Dillon press. So I will need to but an expander die.

      DUH.

      Thanks

        +1

of course this is correct if we assume you are using a dillon press. The expanding procedure to seat the bullet depends on the brand of press you are using. Lee presses, for example, rely on an expanding die to get the seating of the bullet started, and this expanding die is included in straight-wall Lee dies.

ive never needed a expander if i use full metal jacket they just kind of squish their way in

and i've not needed to crimp

if you are using lead or copper plated you should expand

30 carbine is an odd one even using carbide dies i lube one every 5 or 10

My current stock of bullets are Berry's plated. I think I'd rather use an expander.

The dillon die box states explictly to use lube even though it's a carbide die. Strange I can load .357, 9mm, 10mm, .40, .41, .44 & .45 using carbide dies without lube, but not .30 carbine

              I found the same thing.
You can't size it like you would a pistol cartridge with carbide dies.
I have to lube every few cases to make the sizing go easier.

Interesting observation this evening. I bought a 1000 rounds of Magtech 110gr 30 carbine. I was at the range last week and went thru about 100 testing my new-to-me CMP NPM carbine. While picking up the spent brass, I noticed a few primers had backed out somewhat and two had no primer in them at all.

Anyway, tonight while reloading those same cases, two of them wouldn't hold the primers!! Just fell right out. Wow, never figured Magtech for loose primer pockets but this is the first time I've used their brass.

                Oh well, live and learn.
