New Lyman #55 powder measure; initial cleaning

Hey there folks! Just upgraded my powder measure from hand-weighing to the Lyman #55. From reading the forums (and the instructions) I know I have to clean it thoroughly before using.

Any issue with using mineral spirits to clean the packing oil off the metallic internals? I've seen mention of using alcohol, but I don't have any 99% on hand (and don't want to use drugstore strength due to water content).

    Thoughts?

How about filling it & reloading with it!

I would use denatured alcohol to get rid of any residue. Dry with compressed air, fill and load.

As ODC mentions use a cleaner that will not leave a residue behind, denatured alcohol, acetone, etc. Do the cleaning three times but keep the solvent off any plastic parts or the finish. Then I suggest dusting the interior of the measure and all measuring chamber parts with dry powdered graphite:

I have a larger can of graphite that I have been using since the 1970's, I adjust the measure to it's largest volume and fill it to the bottom of the plastic reservoir, then measure the graphite back into the can. I do this occasionally to disperse static charges and increase accuracy of the charges. Graphite is used to coat the kernels of most powder for the same reason by powder manufacturers. A larger can is available here:

It is also a good idea to empty the measure after each loading session, place a small silica gel pack inside the reservoir and cap it, especially in humid climates.

Thanks all; appreciate the advice! I usually prefer acetone for cleaning, given its very quick evaporation. I'll pick some up, rub her down, and dust with graphite.
