Is it possible? Is it safe?

I have a Remington rolling block that originally was chambered in 7mm Mauser. The gun was purchased in the 50's from Warner Bros by my Grandpa. Warner Bros rechambered it to 30-06 to fire blanks for movies. The bore is still 7mm and in great shape.

Would it be possible to neck down a 30-06 shell to fit a 7mm bullet. I'm not looking to use a full charge, just would like to shoot the gun without spending a ton of money on a new barrel.

    It's called a 280, A 30-06 necked down to 7mm, have it checked by a good gunsmith.

It might work. Have it looked at by a competent gunsmith.

A .280 Remington is not a just a 30/06 necked down to 7MM, a .280 Remington has the shoulder moved forward .050" to avoid a .280 Remington being chambered in a .270 Winchester like a true 7MM/06 could possibly do. Just a technical point.

I also think the old rolling block may not be able to handle the current Commercial/factory loaded .280 Remington pressures.

A check with a competent Gunsmith as Toby suggested would be in order.

I will have the gun checked, I also would want to lighten the load of the factory round, or find someone to load some for me.

Probably '06 neck with 7mm bore. Have it rebarreled to a old west cartridge.

Spending $500 on a barrel isn't an option for me right now.
