slug molds

what are the pros and cons on the lee molds compared to the lyman. ive checked online, people.prefer the lee for plinking and the lyman for hunting and 100+ yard accuracy . i just want to know if any of you gents have any direct expierence with these products. i will be shooti ng out of a short 18.5" smooth barrel. i have tried wax slugs but want something to shoot in an auto shotgun.

I believe the Lyman is heavier but i have the lee and its worked out great so far. Another mold you can use is a 1/2" plywood with 5/8 hole drilled. Place it on flat surface and pour melted lead in the hole. Tha-da! Slug for 12g. Lol.

do you guys repurpose the birdshot and place the slugs back in the birdshot hulls?

I have used the lyman 525gn subot slug with great success and would defiantly recommend it. The lyman foster slug is not nearly as good as it is under bored and leads to accuracy issues.

why would you do that? lead is worth $0.75 a pound while birdshot is worth $2.00 a pound or more. you would be best off trading it. As well as birdshot is way harder than you need for reloading slugs.

baced off this you seam like you want to disassemble shells and replace the shot with slugs. While I don't recommend this if you must you would probably be better of with the lee slug.

I take out the birdshot, melt it and use it in the LEE slug, and replace and glue.

however, it is best to single load these shells, as the recoil in the tube will cause the slug to dislodge, and the powder will not burn properly. ive had a slug get stuck in my choke. but the powder did not burn all the way and all of the other slugs before this fired fine. I shot all the other home made slugs, single shot and had no problem. in my 4th picture you can see the unburnt powder that's on the bottom of the wad.
so if you want to shoot them, crimp the shell and slug in place so it cant move when in a tube.

Um, no I load these as single projectiles from start to finish.. no different than loading any other payload be it lead shot, steel shot, other non-toxic shot, buck shot or slugs.

I meant load one, shoot, load one, shoot.
don't load like 4+1 and rack them in the slide,
if youre going to take the birdshot out, melt it, make it a slug, and put it back in with glue that is.

Not what I ment. Trade the birdshot for lead ingots.

I buy birdshot shells and replace the shot with slugs. I like using Estate shells, Federal works great also but Winchester doesn't work because those have ribs in the shot cup. I open the crimp, remove the shot, put a slug then recrimp. Although the slug itself is short of filling the whole volume, the shot cup is held in place by the crimp.

thanks gents. need slugs and this seems as the only way to get them is to make them.

You can buy them and load but it is cheaper to cast them.
