Ive seen a guy on youtube doing this. Lead is getting expensive, even the wheel weight mfg's are moving to steel.

in CA you cant use lead for wheel weights any more
but if you find old lead ones they will melt and work for boolets

Yep. Definitely a MacGyver move. I do it too on odd weekends. You've never heard of cast bullets? The work in rifles too.

Smooth barrel application was only practical reason I was thinking for, Cause wouldn't the lead fill the rifling in barrels unless the lead is coated ?

Thousands of rounds of .38 special I have cast and shot using straight wheel weights.

                        1. you're a few years late. lead wheel weights have been banned in CA for some years now.

                        2. You'd have to drop the FPS of your loads waaaaay down to like 1900 ish and put gas checks on them.

better off buying lead offline for about a buck a pound. If I were really going to make my own .224 I'd get a corbin setup and use swaged .22lr casings to jacket lead cores.

Wheel weights are good hard alloys that work well, can't always depend on knowing the exact mix but these are choice items for reloading

I've used wheel weights and also sheet lead from tile roof tear offs.
