Kinetic bullet pullers

So of course I screwed up a few rounds right as a newb I expected that. My question is how much force does it take to unlodge a bullet? I am swinging this thing like a hammer and so far 1 round has popped out and 3-4 I stopped trying (.40 & .45).

I am basically going to buy the RCBS collet bullet puller. However now I am a little concerned that the rounds may be too tightly seated in the brass.

Any comments from experienced reloaders?

be sure to strike hammer on a hard surface,harder the better.

.40 and .45 should come apart after a couple of hard whacks
Usually one initial hard smack and a couple of smaller ones

Taper crimps come out fairly easily

Problem solved. Turns out plywood is not hard enough but a lead weight is perfect.

Don't forget to put some cloth or sheets of fabric softener dryer sheets in the nose of the hammer to help prevent damage to the bullet.

The back of a baby seal head is also a suitable striking surface if plywood doesn't cut it.

Ive done close to 30 without a soft nose tip devise and I havnt had a problem with damaged tips on the bullets.

I've broken my RCBS twice now in two years. This time I actually broke the head off...

You need a hard surface that wont let the head recoil. Although maybe you shouldn't take advice from someone that just broke one...

I bought one from Grafs and works well enough. About 4-5 decent whacks on my work bench did the job to knock loose some 308 loads from last night.

It'll happen. Particularly if you are using soft point, lead or (sometimes even) plated bullets.

Print out these pictures,, lay them on the garage floor. Do what comes naturally ... i guarantee the bullets will come out

^^^ This. I use my concrete garage floor.

Lots of moderate taps should do the trick. After a few taps tighten down the screw on cap. Makes a difference.

I used to hate using my Frankford arsenal impact puller. Takes a lot of hard whacking against a 2 x 4 to pull a 223 bullet, till I discovered that plastic chopping board works real well. I dont even whack it as hard as I used to. For 9mm, 3 to 4 not so hard whack and the bullet's out. I just wished they made one with a covered cap. I had to cut a greeting card type paper to cover the top hole to keep the powder from spilling.

I think a 2x4 might be to soft. It seems like to me, if the nose can recoil in any way, the downward force is not transferred to the bullet but into the recoil.

I broke mine on a jute covered cat scratching post (for the noise) and I think the spring back is what snapped it.

Firm taps on a solid surface, like concrete or hard plastic.
