    NT Brass Question

I just came across some Federal and Winchester brass casings in .45 ACP. They are headstamped NT for non-toxic and they have a small pistol primer. My question is can they be reloaded by using a standard small pistol primer? Will a standard sizing and decapping die size the case and decap the spent primer? Or will the small primer pocket break the decapping pin? And is it worth the trouble? Thanks in advance for any information.

I have thankfully not come across any of these in my brass scrounging (yet), but had read about them when I started reloading for .45 a few years ago.

My understanding is that the standard SP primer should work fine (no need for mag). Your decaping pin should work fine as well, but it may behoove you to go slowly the first time you run one through.

I decided that if I ever came across this brass, I would hold it aside. I don't throw much away, but I wouldn't want it getting co-mingled with my LP brass. If I were to load it up, it would be for shooting on days when I wasn't picking up brass for whatever reason.

If you've got a bunch of it, perhaps you want to keep it and use it.... but just remember what a pain it will be if you're mixing LP and SP brass into the same bucket when it comes time to reload.

Probably more of a PITA than it's worth for most people.

NT brass is Extremely aggravating in a progressive press. The NT brass will go through the de-capping/ resize station without incident but at the priming station a dangerous situation is created when large primers are crushed instead of being seated.
I don't believe the NT rounds are non toxic (maybe less but not non) and should be discontinued along with the GAP cartridges. IMHO both are an inadequate answer to a non existent problem.

I have some across several of these in my Dillon 650. You can tell something is not right when you push the handle. STOP and you should be fine, but keep pushing and your ears will be ringing for quite a while when that primer goes off. I am finding quite a few of these casings lately.

When I find them they go into the scrap brass bucket.

When I pick up brass, mine and theirs, at my local range, I get some NT. Instead of being frustrated, I simply throw them in a coffee can. When the can is full, I will reload them with small primers. Folks we are cheap! Why not use it?
