Lead Free Bullet Sources??

Well as the CA Condor Lead ban approaches and I still have 500+ rounds of leaded ammo, I'm starting to wonder where I can get lead free ammo from.

I know non-lead .22 LR is non existant, and CCI has a "Green" TNT bullet coming out in .22 WMR, Barnes makes a .20 and .22 cal Varmint Grenade... is there anyone else making a non-lead bullet? Anything on the horizon?

Any .17 HMR or reloadable .17 cal bullets, any other .22 cal bullets or .223 Rem?


I've talked to some depridation hunters and hunting guides who are in contact with the Fish and Game Rangers (or whatever you call em) and they are saying that they are going to be enforcing the lead ban, so I'm trying to plan ahead. I know it's only a fine for the first offence, but it's a $500 fine and the second offense is a mandatory $1000 Now I've never see the warden in these parts, but I know he's around, and would likely come over to talk to me real fast if he heard me blasting...

im just wondering how they are going to check to see if bullets are really lead free....

Same here, guess I'll find out.

Probably some CSI type test, cut a bullet in half, spray some stuff on it and if it changes color it's lead.... Just a guess though

If he heard you blasting (target shooting), you're fine. The lead ban only applies to hunting.

Actually, if you knew more about the new law, it does make a lot of sense.
The basis of the lead ban is that the condors are eating carcasses left with lead bullets in them.
If you are jut plinking, you are not going to leave any carcasses with lead in them for condors to eat.

There's supposed to be some enforcement provisions that still allow for hunting with lead bullets as long as you either transport the lead contaminated carcass/guts out of the field, or bury it to a depth where it will not be eaten by condors.

Most rifle barrels will not have enough twist to stabilize the bullet, especially the varmint calibers.

This law is just another way to discourage gun ownership in the state. It's part of the plan.

Condors have been a on a fast track toward extinction since the last ice age and wildlife biologists have killed more condors than lead ever has.

Yea, thats what I've heard too, at least with the 36gr in the hornet. I'm going to try it in my .223 and maybe the 50 gr Varmint Grenade too... I've got to rebarrel my .223 so Im thinking of going with a new caliber or trading the rifle and starting a new project. Looks like a hornet and anything not .20 or .224 caliber is out.

You might reconsider using the Barnes varmint grenades or any other. I've read a lot of stuff on another forum that sure makes it seem like they helped this little ban come to fruition.

You can still hunt "small game species" with lead rim fire ammo in the condor zone. Non-game species like ground squirrels you do.

If the condors do go extinct can we use lead again???? I doubt it, just another way for the dems to take our hobby away.
