I would be a mite cautious about hollow pointing full metal jacket boolits --
It probably is only a remote possibility, but I believe there are documented cases of a hp fmj shedding the jacket in the bore --
At least in a rifle application --

This youtube video shows a guy using bullets almost exactly the same as what I am making with my jigs but I can make them a lot faster and more accurately centered...

2 Dies are needed to swage the .40S&W HP...40S&W's for 2 press pulls, scrounging for 9mm brass and some casting lead cores will result in HP. (Since you talk about SHTF, you are learning casting right?)

Not all all complicated, dies are the upfront $$, but the results are a lifetime of HP bullets. He also makes dies for other calibers as well, I like the .223 Remington using 22LR brass cases.

Here's some more pics of this HP bullets.

Off note but wouldn't it be cool if you could make / buy a bullet with the little face of the supermario bullet?

Just an update - I test fired 20 rounds of each 9mm and 45acp drilled to various depths and had no problems. The 9mm seemed normal, the 45acp seemed to have a little more muzzle flash...

Could you make a jig that would allow me to take a .30 cal FMJ bullet and turn it into a hollow point? I would love to be able to cut a small hole in the jacket tip so I could use FMJ at the silhouette matches

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

I'll ask my machinist the next time I talk to him but he takes a long time to make these because he's usually backed up with orders for other stuff...
