What am I doing wrong? Need help with my reloader...

It's kind of odd, yesterday is the 1st time this is happening to me & it's doing it alot! I'm using a Dillon 650 and at the 2nd stage it's seating the primer sideways!



Whats causing this? and can this brass casing be saved?
is it ok to use the bullet puller hammer to get it out???

You can save the case, just knock the primer out carefully and wear earplugs just in case it goes off.

Is there anything in the priming area that might be causing the primers to flip up like that? You might have to take it apart and clean it out just to be sure there's not a brass shaving or... in the way.

I remember reading about this and found this thread. Particularly look at posts 5, 11 and 14.

I would cycle the press, just feeding the primers and see if they are leaving the primer tube sideways or if the primers are flipping on their side when the primer is getting seated. That should point you in the right direction. I would guess some crud is in there which helps the primer flip on its side.

I could not tell if that case had a bullet on it or not but if you want to save the case and it does have a bullet seated, I would pull the bullet first before messing with the primer.

The primers are protesting as they don't want to be subjected to the POS Federal brass.

Seriously, just run the press and see what happens. Do it slowly and pay close attention. Short of that, give Dillon a call.

happens to me in 1 out of about 150 when i load 45s on a dillon 550


how many screw ups are you getting?


they say you can reload 400 rounds an hour but i think you should slow down a bit unless you want a 2% error rate

that happens to me more when i use winchester primers

of course i get the few that dont want to seat and the ones i seat flipped

at 3 cents each it does get annoying after a couple

Shoot the primer with WD-40, let it sit a minute and punch it out. The lube will kill or substantially disable the primer.

I have a dillon 650 and 99% of the time this is caused by powder getting into the primer feed mechanism. Try blowing it out with compressed air (those little cans you use on computers work well) and if that doesnt work then take it off the press to make sure it is clean and then reinstall it making sure it is on there nice and snug.

Be careful with this. I have soaked primers in WD-40 overnight and they still went Bang.

First time happened to me 2 days ago after 5000+ reloads with my Lee hand priming tool.

Mine does that every once in awhile too. I just ran it through station one again. For me, they just popped out and I was able to put a new primer in them with no problems.

Press out the bad primer slowly with the deprime die while wearing safety glasses. I use an Official Mc Donalds straw to blow away bits of powder, low tech but works great.

Well, I would assume they had read a reloading book prior to reloading but yes, safety first.

Clean everything. Make sure that you are using the rod that goes on top of the primers to keep weight on them. Deprime carefully and wear hearing protection while doing so. I'd use a lightweight oil like sewing machine oil to kill the primers.
