Finally shot my reloads

Made it to the range today to sight in my new 30-06 and try some loads for that. Also to try some loads for my Savage Axis in .223.

I am stoked at how one of my loads worked out. I didnt even think i could shoot this well! The savage has the cheapo Bushnell 3-9x40 scope on it.

Load: 40 grain hornady v-max behind 25.0 grains varget. 5 Shout group just under an inch, .711"

All my fingers still intact. Also realized i measured my group wrong, i originally measured from edge to edge of the furthest holes. fixed it to be from center to center. group is now under 3/4"

Very glad with the results, will probably load a bunch more with .1 grain variations off of my original 25 grains and see how those work out.

It's really cool (to me) to find nodes across a range of loads. Groups tighten, then spread again. Really amazing to see the physics in action with barrel harmonics, etc.

Although I've found that 'good' is not enough for me anymore. I was at the range Sunday, and the guys to my right would have been happy with any of my load-groups; but I got all OCD and went through each series, explaining where the nodes were. Eyes glazed over until I mentioned I'm loading 30-06 for about .60 per

I love the testing of different loads. Its neat to see the difference on how different bullets shoot out of the same gun.

Isn't it a great feeling, knowing you can reload your own ammo, shoot it, and live to tell the tale, with all your original fingers, toes, eyes, eyebrows!

But you are SO SCREWED! You are never going to save a dime with this new hobby.

Haha, thanks guys. I've accepted that I wont be saving money, but instead ill just be shooting more! Which is perfectly fine by me.

It is a great feeling to see the work ive put in pay off, except now i just want more, and i want to figure out the best loads with a number of different bullet weights as well.

Shooting was done at 100 yards with a bipod sitting on a bench.


Another thing i forgot to mention was how amazed i am that the Savage could be this accurate (and i think even more so with some practice on my part). There was a period of time that i was having trouble with the action, and cases getting stuck, but i sorted all that out. (ie kept it really clean, and stopped using steel cased ammo) and now i love the thing.
