My lee carbide 9mm seating die has started scraping/shaving a small patch off my brass cases. I dissassembled the dies, cleaned them, reasssembled, and readjusted them. I finished my last batch without incident, but I was super careful about getting the bullet and brass inserted into the die. I'm going to do another batch this evening. Any ideas what the problem is if this reoccurs? I use a classic lee turret press. I only use the press for powder charge, bullet seating and crimping. I resize and deprime on a single stage press and hand prime my cases.

Seating die shaving brass cases

I've noticed my FCD does it a little, never really cared that much. I think it's the taper crimp rubbing a little brass off when crimping. I've loaded 9mm cases 8-10 times with out an issue.
Why don't you do everything on your Turret press? When I get rockin I can load 200 round per hour. The system works really well.If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine. -
Creature of habit. I use the single stage press to deprime and resize, carbon buildup from used primers, less wear and tear on the turret press and I clean the primer pockets after depriming. I use range brass and sometimes the primer pockets are pretty bad. I like to hand prime too. I do on occasion hook up the primer and go at it, but the name of my softball team says it all "Old but slow".Soylent green is peeplesComment

Seating die shaving brass cases
Are you sure it's the seating die and not from the powder through charging die? If you are using the auto disk configuration with the powder thru charging die Improperly adjusted the brass gets rammed a little too hard and I have found brass shavings there. Worth checking
If not make sure you back the bullet seating die out enough to make sure it's not crimping as well as seatingLast edited by the led farmer; 06-09-2013, 2:04 PM.Comment

It's the seating die. I can feel the case scrape against the die. I'm going to back everything out and reset the dies according to the installation instructions and see if that fixes it.Soylent green is peeplesComment

If you don't want to crimp while you seat with a properly resized brass in the shell holder raise the ram up, screw the die down until it touches the brass then back it OUT two full turns. Lock the die down then adjust the seating screw to seat bullet to proper depth

If the case is properly chamfered, this won't happen. It also happens with expanders as they scrape down the case mouth and shave what should have been removed by chamfering. It doesn't affect anything, other than requiring brushing off the press a bit more. The brass that collects in the die won't cause a problem for decades, if ever.Comment
