    Couple Problems reloading 9mm

I recently started reloading 9mm and for the most part is going well I just have a few bugs to work out.

First, I had three bullets get lodged in the barrel. I don't really know what happens but a bullet gets stuck about 1/2 inch or so into the barrel. When this happens, it is really hard to get it out. The tips were I don't know how to describe it, looks like someone pinched the very tip with pliers.

Second, when it cycles another round into the camber, its like the round doesn't get all the way into the chamber. When the slide goes forward, it hits the round that is trying to go into the chamber. So when you look at it from above, the round is at a steep angle with the tip of the bullet in the barrel. It is hard to drop the magazine but once I get it out, the round pretty much falls out.

Third, I have had several stove pipes.

I do not think it has anything to do with the gun. It is a Springfield XD9. I have only shot it a few times and I been keeping it very clean. I am using 125 gr RN bullets with federal primers and 3.3 gr of Clays powder.

You forgot to put powder into those rounds! The primer pushes it into the barrel... this is called a "squib"...

RE: misfeed... what OAL do you use? sometimes that will contribute to misfeed.... do you case gauge each of your rounds? you should

Have you chrono your rounds? I just wonder if you load them too weak...

That would be weird. I have a Dillon 550B so I don't really see how there could not be powder in them. I always keep the powder thing full, I full it once it gets to about 1/3 from being empty.

Are you taking every ten or so aside and measuring to make sure there's enough powder? That might also solve your last problem.

For your second problem, you might be loading to an incorrect overall length.

I don't measure the powder that often but every 100 or so I do. I do check a handful every so often for the length and I know they are dead on. I am using the maximum recommended load so I think there is enough powder in them. When I first started I started with the lowest amount of powder and they would not eject and I worked my way up and I liked the maximum load the best.

I've a 550B, I had 1 squib before too. Happened when I kinda walked away, and when I come back to resume, i advanced the station...

You just would have to be more careful.

ALSO, in those times, do the case actually eject? If it does, then you may just be under powder.... if the case stayed in the chamber, then it would definitely be a squib.

            Please post your numbers:
            - OAL
            - powder type and wt

And maybe some pictures of your rounds

My OAL is .125 powder is Clays with 3.3 gr. I will post pictures tomorrow, I need to get to bed soon, I have a final tomorrow morning.

You must be right. I probably walked away and then advanced the round without charging it. I going to hope that is what happened. I don't know if the case stayed in the chamber, I was not the one that was shooting it all the times it happened. I do remember seeing spilled powder one of the times though, not sure if it was from that round or not though.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Maybe you've got cleaning media in the flash hole?
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

Just advance the shellplate twice and you will make a squib.

Check that your bullets are not seated too long for your chamber.
With the barrel off the gun, you should be able to drop a round into the chamber and hear a "thunk".
If you don't hear a solid "thunk", they are too long, or your chamber is too tight.

I have been finding this problem on a lot of aftermarket glock barrels lately.
Hand-reaming the chamber with my 9mm reamer fixes the problem every time.

                    OAL .125????

Squib is VERY VERY VERY dangerous... since one may not notice that it is a squib, and just rack the slide and chamber and fire another round... that would be disastrous.... the gun will basically kaboom/blow-up right in your hand...

So, please be more careful... and try to train yourself and anyone else shooting your reloads to recognize a "squib".... (after one pulled the trigger, instead of BOOM, it is just a click... and when one rack the slide, a case comes out...)..... STOP immediately and check for the squib......

AND TO CHECK FOR A SQUIB, YOU DO NOT POINT THE GUN AT YOURSELF AND LOOK INTO THE MUZZLE!!!

RE: spilled powder, you need to check whether you forgot to prime some cases...

You really should case-gauge EACH round.

And you should check powder dropped every so often..

Only squib I ever loaded happened while teaching someone to run the 550.
Technically, he loaded it, but it ended up in my ammo bag at the end of the loading session.

That's what I get for not following rule #1: Don't shoot anyone else's reloads.

Luckily, I noticed the squib before doing a tap-rack and potentially trashing the gun.

Run your press dry before walking away.
Load the last 4 rounds without adding cases into station 1.
That way, there is no question as to the state of each case sitting on the shellplate.

Sorry, OAL is 1.125. Once the bullet was stuck in the barrel, there was no way to advance the next round. It was stuck right inside the barrel. When I got the bullets out of the barrel, I broke the gun down and pushed it out with a cleaning brush. Wow its already 11:30.
