I will post several pictures for you of just how easy it is to determine how far the shoulder is being moved as you are over complicating this very simple step.If you don't understand it please post and I will explain it more thoroughly.

The 1st photo simply shows 4 gizzies
The 2nd photo shows a piece of 6 Dasher brass before bumping the shoulder.
The 3rd photo shows the same piece of brass bumped 0.001
The 4th photo shows the same piece of brass using a different gizzy.
The 5th photo shows the same piece of brass bumped 0.001

The length of the shoulder has been set back 0.001 for proper chambering in a benchrest rifle. You do the exact same thing with a gas gun except you use more setback. This is not a one size fits all scenario it is set like this for each chamber.
I can not post anymore pictures on this post so I will post a second time showing how it is done without a gizzy.

This is how it can be done without a gizzy.Again you can use a comparator or whatever you have available.

1st photo shows a 300 wsm, case slipped over the neck of the original piece of 6 Dasher brass.

2nd photo shows the same piece of brass with the shoulder bumped 0.001

You are over complicating this very easy task in my opinion and I too can set up brass in my reloading room without the go gage or the feeler gage.I can even set up brass for your gun by talking to you on the phone and then bringing the brass to you.
      Its just that easy.

If you look at the pictures in my second post above that contains pictures I am not using any special tools. I am using a empty 300 WSM case and a $8 caliper from Harbor Freight.

The 6 Dasher case pictured is not a SAAMI Spec cartridge it is a wildcat cartridge based off of the 6BR case and it is used for 600-1000 yard benchrest/Varmint shooting.

On a single shot target rifle we generally use 0.001 -- 0.0015 clearance as measured above. If we used more clearance we would lose peak pressure as the case expanding to fill the now bigger void in the chamber would take away pressure.

On a gas gun such as mentioned by Popeye4 above we would set the clearance between 0.003 --- 0.004 so we didn't encounter feeding issues.

To load this cartridge you can either create a false shoulder on the case and blow the shoulder forward 0.100 inch using 6 BR brass or you can use 243/308 brass and move the shoulder back.

Anyway you look at it we still need to know how far the shoulder of the case is away from the shoulder in the chamber and my method posted above is very easy to do and works for any cartridge.

Sorry to disrupt your thread but I didn't want people thinking this was some kind of voodoo magic.
If your shooting a bolt action rifle for precision 0.001 --- 0.0015 as pictured above is perfect.
If your loading for a hunting rifle 0.002 clearance is all you need.
On a gas gun I would use 0.003 -- 0.004 and not worry one bit.
As already posted the caliper runs less than $10 at Harbor Freight and has lots of uses in your reloading room.
The tool I call the "gizzy" is called a comparator or headspace tool depending on who sells it and they run $10-$50 depending on what model you buy.
Clymer,Hornady,Brownells,Sinclair,Harrells Precision and most gunsmiths make or sell them.
Most precision bolt rifle shooters set there die and either leave it alone or paint a stripe on it and rarely if ever measure there headspace.
