    How to melt used lead?

I am picking up alot of spent rounds from a dirt embankment, however most are jacketed.

I have a melting pot and was wondering if someone could tell me how to seperate the lead from the other impurities? or will it just happen when I melt the lead and all impurities will float to the top that I can skim off?

If that is the case, what do I use for skimming the impurities out?

    Thanks

not sure if brass/copper plating will float but if they dont you can use a spoon with holes in it to skim all the impurities out. dont forget to flux. I use frankford arsenols flux compound. Fallow the directions on the container so that you dont waste flux

When you melt it the jackets and unwanted stuff will float to the top.

Dont get it too hot and the impurities like zinc won't melt and will float as well.Get it just hot enough to melt the lead and nothing else and it will be fine.

And you can use old tumbler media , bees wax , saw dust, or old candles to flux. Don't need all that fancy stuff for the first cleaning.

Get a metal slotted spoon from the cheapest place you can find.

Everything that weighs less than lead will float to the surface. Almost everything weighs less than lead. Just be sure to keep your gold and uranium separate.

Scoop off the floaty stuff and dispose of responsibly.

Avoid the vapors and wash your hands a lot. Lead poisoning sucks.

You have discovered berm mining. Check the castboolits guys, they are the undisputed kings of lead recycling.

My dad used to us little blobs of gun grease or bee's wax, (I don't remember for sure) to flux the melted lead.

Small bits of wax and stir a lot, or saw dust or wood pellets from a smoker.

wax is no good, it'll catch and burn. sawdust is better by far.

Don't forget to cut open the jacketed bullets if they are FMJ and only deformed but not broken.
