    223 reloading question

some one told me that not all ar-15 can shoot different grain bullets? is this true, i have some 50 grain bullets and they said that most guns can only shoot 55 grain?
it doesn't make any sense because they are the same diameter. thanks in advance

What they mean is that depending on the rifling twist of your barrel, bullets of different weights will not shoot well in some barrels.

If you have a 1 turn in 12" (1:12") twist barrel the heavier bullets (70 grain and up) will not stabilize and they will be wildly inaccurate. I have shot bullets from 36 grains up through 8 grains in 1:7" barrels. And the 1:8" to 1:9" twist barrels will shoot the 50 grain through 70 grain bullets fine.

When it comes to accuracy, every barrel is different though and you have to experiment with different brand and weight bullets to find the ones that are the most accurate in your barrel.

Basically, "any" AR-15 will shoot 40-62 grain bullets well.

Most will shoot 45-69gr well, and a few (1:8 or 1:7 twist barrels) will shoot up to 77-80gr bullets but may not work as well with under 50gr as slower twist barrels do.

            That's a pretty handy chart

Be careful of that chart. The kreiger 1:7.7 LOVES 82gr bergers even though the chart says that it shouldn't be ideal. Also realize that it's not really about weight of the bullet but jacket/barrel bearing surface, so an 80gr VLD may shoot better than an 80gr HPBT in a faster twist barrel.

I have two S&W Sports one with a 1/8 barrel and the other 1/9. The both shoot Hornady 50gr V-Max bullets great. The real problem come when you shoot light jacketed varmit bullets in 1/7 barreled rifles, where the varmit bullets are spinning so fast they may come apart at the exite the barrel.
