    Ammo Box

    Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, apologies if it is not.

I'm just looking for ideas... I'm hoping to find a heavy duty plastic or synthetic box, drybox would be great, that is hefty and large enough with compartments to hold a few hundred to a thousand or so rounds each of 3 or 4 types of ammo for day trips to outdoor shooting ranges or desert outings. Something I can lug around in a trunk or truck bed so I'm not having to mess with individual 50cal ammo cans or loose boxes in gun bags. I've looked at tool chests and even large tackle boxes, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for... which I may be realizing doesn't exist.

But, I thought if something like this does exist you all might know about it.

Thanks for any advice you might provide!

30 cal ammo cans stored in a milk crate. Throw it in the back of the truck and you are good to go. You can get 3 30s + 1 50 cal in a crate or 2 50s + 1 30 cal. I use the 3 30 cals, one for each caliber, and the 50 cal is for the empties.

Not sure what your price range is, but pelican has some pretty heavy duty cases. They come in almost any size for any need. You could remove the foam altogether, or cut it to fit your specific needs. Here is a link to one that might suit your needs.

Dang those Pelican cases are nice... I was hoping to get into this for $100 or less, but dang those cases are growing on me. I'll have to look into them further. Thanks for the link jglabe.

I love the can and crate idea mycrstuff. I am going to look into that as it's closer to my price range.

        Thanks!

I purchased a few of these, a bit less than $15 each, and they should fit your needs. My fullest unit has roughly 25x to 30x 50 round boxes of 40 S&W in a 5 high by 5 to 6 wide configuration; this equates to up to 1,250 rounds. You can pack a hell of a lot more if they were in zip lock bags too. I can take a picture if you want to see it.

This is more affordable at $27, but obviously not as durable as the other cases. You can make foam blocks to create compartments or better yet, just use smaller plastic boxes inside to keep smaller loose boxes.

            Capacity (qt.) 108 qt (US)
            Product Height (in.) 14
            Product Length (in.) 37.75 in
            Product Width (in.) 18.25

SKB also offers some roll away cases that are well constructed. I don't know what size you need, but the SKB 1SKB-RLX4 4U Rack ckase is sized approximately 2 1/2 50 cal cans. It has a nice rollaway wheels. Its around $180 new and you can get it on ebay for around $134 shipped. The problem with this design is that you have to remove the items on top to get to the boxes on the bottom, similar to an ammo can.

            Interior Width: 19.00 in / 48.26 Cm
            Interior Height: 5.25 in / 13.34 Cm
            Exterior Depth: 21.75 in / 55.25 Cm
            Exterior Width: 24.75 in / 62.87 Cm
            Exterior Height: 9.00 in / 22.86 Cm

Here is another option from SKB available in Ebay for $120 new.

            Weights & Dimensions
            Interior Length: 20.50 in / 52.07 cm
            Interior Width: 15.50 in / 39.37 cm
            Interior Depth: 7.50 in / 19.05 cm
            Carton Length: 22.00 in / 55.88 cm
            Carton Width: 18.50 in / 46.99 cm
            Carton Depth: 8.50 in / 21.59 cm

In case you didn't know, SKB is a very good brand. I prefer them over Pelican cases most of the time. All my fishing tackle boxes for long range are SKB cases and they will last a lifetime. The product support from SKB is superb. I have called them about missing logos or damaged locking tabs (that I damaged by accident) and they shipped replacement parts that same day on their own dime for free! Its made in the good old USA.

You just need a plastic tote with wheels. Something like this.

Sometimes I'm not fond of built-in wheels unless they can handle the abuse like heavy ammo in this case. I rather just get a regular box and if I need a wheel, get one of the durable folding wheel carts.

I get some of my reloads in plastic ammo type cans.
Don't really trust them if they were dropped.
I use Military surplus ammo cans, I trust these more than I would plastic.
They are more durable considering they have been in use by the military for how many years??

How much ammo are you talking about? If I have loose bulk ammo, I usually cut a few pieces of thick cardboard to fit a .50 can, and section off the ammo in the can.

Wow. Thanks for all the response everyone. I've just begun going through all the links and researching all the recommendations... plenty of reading to do.

SonofWWIIDI, I'm hoping to use a case as a combo storage and range day transport; refilling it with newer lots when it gets low or empty. As far as max capacity I'd like a box that will fit about four or five hundred or so 2 3/4" or 3" shot shells, 500+ .45acp, 500-1000 .223/5.56, and a smaller number of rifle cal (.308, 7mm mag, .300win mag, etc.) maybe 100-200 rounds.

I like the USGI cans in crates on the collapsible handtruck, rugged flexibility at it's finest.
After watching WTC Bldg #7 being razed, and considering it's main occupants..

I stumbled onto this note while checking advanced weapons..
"911 = false flag. WTC 7 was brought down by demolition. 47 floors came down in 6 1/2 seconds - not hit by a plane. Just one of hundreds of absurdities that occurred that day. Wake up".

Everyone here made a better suggestion than I am about to make.

Everyone else suggested what I do and prefer: "mess with individual 50cal ammo cans or loose boxes in gun bags". This is truly the best way, and EVERYONE here has suggested you keep doing it.

but its not the suggestion you WANTED.

What I think you want, as you described it, is this:

Along with homemade inserts to hold pistol ammo upright, and rifle ammo on its side. You would be able to hold 500 pistol rounds upright in each drawer, and 100-200 rifle in each drawer.

The top can hold jags, patches, takedown rods, and small trinkets.

I don't suggest moving shotgun ammo in a case like this.
