Thinking about casting. Prices for lead online (I'm sure shipping is high due to weight) seem high. Where are you sourcing lead locally or reasonably priced online?

Lead online goes about $1 a lb. Lots of ebay sellers ship 12 lbs in a "if it fits it ships" box about $6.
Roto Metals is another source.
My local sources I don't give up , hard to find with all the newbies starting to cast. But I will tell you that some of the pure lead I get may have an after life of a few years and glows in the dark

Try a local outdoor range. If some hasn't already done so already they might allow you mine their backstop berm for the lead.Comment

12 pounds of lead? if you cast a 200 grain 45 cal, that's 420 bullets minus wastage. hardly seems worth it. Better, methinks, to buy in 50-60 lb lots if not more.Comment

It's out there but getting hard to find. I scored 150lbs for $0.75 a pound from the market place about a year ago. I know a local scrapper that will sell it to me for a few cents under scrap price. Free lead is almost impossible now a days.Comment

$1/lb is pretty cheap considering you get 28+-ish 230gr bullets out of it. That's not counting alloys, scrap, etc.... but you get the idea.
I'm told a MFRB holds about 65# of lead. Your postal peron's gonna LOVE ya!

I got connections in 3 hospitals in my town and a few dentist offices, kids friends all became dental hygenists ( Heald College has done ok by me)

When I get a MFRB of lead, lino or WW at my Post Office they set it on the counter so they don't have to lift more than once!Comment

You can check out local marina owners, if you are lucky enough to live near one. Sail boats have lead in their keels, hundreds of pounds of it, as I recently found out. Folks that don't pay their slip fees and abandon their old boats are not uncommon.NRA Life Member
