I see positive aspects in decapping prior to tumbling brass and also some negatives. Since I am relatively new to the party, I would like to hear what the more experienced folks here are doing AND WHY. BTW, I am reloading 38/357 and 9mm but intend to do .223. Already have my dies for the .223.

Always before. When asked what qualities he most valued in his generals, Napoleon said, "give me lucky ones."Comment

I tumbled a few pieces after decapping(I didn't have any media yet) and poking them out of the flash hole was annoying. If I want to clean the pockets, I'll try a tiny flat head screwdriver or I'll buy the cleaning tool.R.I.P. Curious as to what positives you see to tumbling after decapping? I tried the tumble after was a pain in the butt to clean the flash holes and did not see any positives at all. I thought it may clean the pockets did nothing.I see positive aspects in decapping prior to tumbling brass and also some negatives. After, my media is so fine it doesn't get stuck in the flash holes.
And primer pockets are shinyComment

Before and after. You should always run clean brass into your dies. I tumble after decapping to get the lube off. If your media is fine enough it won't block the flash hole.Comment

Walnut media will get stuck in the flash hole, but also be careful about tumbling capped smaller bottle-neck cases since media may also collect inside the case. When you run it into the decapping die you will "hit a snag" so to speak.
If you SS tumble, decapping first will help clean the primer pockets and drain the water, but I like to decap even with walnut since it allows me to see that the case and flash hole are clear of media."If we make enough laws, we can all be criminals."

I tumble before decapping to clean and than size and than tumble to get the lube off. I than use a hand primer to seat the primers. The first de capping is with a Lee military decapping die in case I have picked up a berdan by mistake. It is extra steps but I enjoy the effort.Comment

Deprime with a universal die.
