Bullet Puller

I got the RCBS bullet puller the other day and I could only get one bullet to come out. I followed the directions in the little manual but for the life of me I can't get the bullets to come out. I am pulling 9mm bullets. Is there a trick to it or could I be doing something wrong? It seems pretty simple but for some reason I can't get it to work.

On the package it said not to hit a metal object. Is there a reason for that? I live in an apartment so my hard objects that I can hit are somewhat limited. I have weights, can I hit those with it? Thanks for the very fast reply.

Ok, got it to work. I used a weight and hit it harder. In the instructions is says not to hit it very hard so I guess I just wasn't hitting it hard enough. Thanks.

You have to flick your wrist and really get some speed on the hammer type bullet pullers. Steel contact will start to deform the plastic the hammer puller is made of pretty quick. Some type of hardwood block would be good to whack it against.

Sooooo... how many did ya goof up? I have a hornady puller that works with my press and I like it. Only had to use it once though.

I loaded about 35 of a load that was too light. I have a few bullets that were seated at the wrong depth when I was setting everything up. I am having fun. My tumbler is going to be here on Monday. I also have some more bullets coming in the mail soon. And I bought 6 more magazines for my XD9. Thanks for everyones help.

ah ya.. the reason I lost my right eye was because I did that... slam it too hard and the bullet explode landing shrapnel in my eye and throat..

I had that problem. Then I swung harder. I was smashing some 2x4's to get some bullets to come out.

You'll destroy the puller quickly if you use it on metal or solid concrete. Rap it on a wood block of 2x4 and it'll pull as well as last.

+1 I have only used some hard wood to smack it on and the plastic of my Dillon puller has no dings or dents in it. Best way is to not make any mistakes but I'm still working on that part

I wouldn't use the hammer type puller for taking down rounds that have been hit by a firing pin and didn't fire (duds). They may just go off with the impact/jarring of the puller at work. I recall a pic and story in an issue of the American Rifleman, I think, showing a pic of a blow up puller.-

Only 35! Boy are you lucky. While I was at your place, did I tell you that my first batch that needed to be pulled was about 300? I didn't notice that I ran out of powder and kept tossing them in a 30cal ammo can. When I realized mt mistake, it was too late, the 20 or so sqibs were mixed in with 200-300 good rounds but, I had no way of telling which ws which. Just remember that even though you're reloading you'll still spend just as much on ammo. You'll just get a lot more of it!
