5.56 primer pocket prep

Does the Lake City 5.56 brass require special prep on primer pockets or can you "punch and load" on a rotary press.

It needs to be de-crimped. The ring in the primer pocket needs to be removed or swaged to the correct size. It only needs to be done once. The dillon swager works good. There are also cutters that ream out the crimp.

Some military brass, the primer pocket is crimped. Looks like a small circle outlining the primer pocket hole. You can do some different things to get the crimp out and reload normally

1. Ream the primer pocket
2. Chamfer the primer pocket with your chamfer/debur tool.
3. Swage the primer pocket.

Sometimes, just pushing out the primer will get the crimp out enough to let another primer in, sometimes not.

After depriming, you must remove the primer pocket crimp. A primer pocket swage, such as the one made by RCBS and others, offers a quick and easy way to remove the crimp from military cases.

I cut primer pockets & flash holes. The Dillon product looks good if you swedge.

Let's not forget case stretch from resizing. After decapping and resizing the case length may be out of spec ant trimming may be needed as well as primer pocket adjustments. There simply is no punch and lisd on rotary presses with bottleneck rifle cartridges.

Majority of the Lake City 5.56 has crimped primer pockets. I've only known one time that it was sold new "without" back in the early 90's I believe by Weidner's. I use RCBS swage to removed the crimp. I use to ream it but you can remove too much brass material and also be reamed off center.

Exactly... There is no sense in ruling perfectly good brass
