    Sorting Brass By Headstamp

After I clean my brass, I spend a significate amount of time sorting the brass by head stamp(manufacture). This also give me a chance to inspect each piece individually. How many of you separate brass by head stamp? Do you notice a difference from non-sorted brass?

    Thank you for your time.

It does make a difference. especially if your pushing a load to max. for safety & acurracy. I have actually sighted in my non adjustable revolvers by changing the manufacturer.

I do sort by headstamp for rifle ammo. I dont bother doing it for pistol ammo.

As already stated, for the best accuracy or uniform performance stay with one head stamp. No really significant difference in various head stamps of quality brass for recreational shooting.

I'm OCD in that department. Left over from color coding my 12g shells. At a glance, I know what's in it. +P goes in nickle.

I see better accuracy with sorted pistol brass. I also learn which types may be problematic in certain situations. Example: I have more problems seating primers in Speer 9mm brass so I set those aside.

I always sort by headstamp. I load on a progressive and each brand has a "feel" to it. It lets me know if there's an issue. On 45acp I may have to adjust the final crimp diameter for different wall thicknesses or sizing & priming pressure required at the handle. I usually wait until I have 100 or more of any off brand (PPC, GFL) or stuff like S&B that is notorious for tight primer pockets, then just dump 'em in the case feeder and I know what to expect

For .308 and .300 winmag yes, everything else no. Especially .223 and pistol brass.

I sort by headstamp, but I only reload WW brass-brass (no nickel) and give the other brands to reloading buddies.

I also believe that using a single manufacture creates consistency with each of my loads. I have a lot of confidence in my reloads and their accuracy. I wanna know when it's me that is not hitting the 'X' and not my ammunition.

Also trim to a specific length for consistent crimp.

Not many do this for handgun loads, but it works for me.

                        YMMV.

yep, I sort both pistol and rifle brass. I started reloading .45acp, and was told sorting wasn't necessary, then I discovered that .45's come in both large and small primers. :-( Now I sort to head stamp out of habit. I feel I'm more accurate.

For really accurate (read as consistent) lot to lot variations can occur even with same headstamp brass. If you want the best accuracy, you will not only sort by headstamp, but also by lot #... unfortunately, if you pick up random brass, there is no way to know which brass comes from which lot#.

If you buy new brass and in enough numbers, say 500-1000 pieces, then you can generally rely on the load being the same since the brass is one less thing to worry about being "different".

During load development and or loadig max loads I sort brass. For lower poser plinking loads I am not as picky.
