    LnL Ap troubleshooting

Ok guys, ran my first set of 9mm brass through my LnL AP strictly for decapping using hornady custom grade die. Randomly, the press will seize on the down stroke until I bring it back up slightly and manually remove the decapped round in the 5th position about to be ejected... Any ideas?

Is the shellplate indexing properly on the up and down stroke? You may need to adjust the pawls to get the timing correct. The manual has the procedure on adjusting the pawls.

Double check to make sure your shell plate is tighten all the way. The Shell plate is wobbling, it could cause the case to get stuck right before ejection.

I ran into this when my press was new also. It tended to do it on smaller base calibers. ie 9mm/223. Mine was because the case was getting hung up on the shellplate and the little piece of steel that kicks out the shell. I ended up using a dremel with a small sanding wheel to create more of a 90 degree angle between the base and the upright portion of metal. (There was a little more at the bottom)

It still occasionally hangs up. Very rarely though. I'd say MAYBE once every 200 rounds.

Go through this periodically, its the brass hanging up on the easy eject. Usually due to little flecks of powder trapped under the shellplate, or the allen screw that secures the shellplate coming a little loose.

It happens rarely and the first thing i do is tighten the shellplate, if that doesnt work i take the shellplate off and vacuum under it with a handheld dirt devil.

Of course you could always polish it up a bit with a dremel but i would be insanely careful about removing too much metal.

Sounds like the shellplate is not indexing properly OR more than likely the pawls need adjustment. Whatever you do, do not force it. the pawls will break very easily.

Another possibility is that the rim of the brass is bad. Does it happen with certain headstamps of brass? I had that problem with some NATO brass.

Actually the problem is the piece the shell plates screw into is machined with too much tolerance. There are two fixes that Hornady should consider making... one make the ezject nub taller so the brass won't slip over the top of it, or adjust the tolerance so the shell plate does not have the free play it has in the vertical direction. You can easily check this by screwing down a shell plate tight and moving it up and down to see the amount of free play it has. I made a shim to take out the free play but it was a little too thick so it was binding up the shell plate a little. I have another idea and I will pitch it to Hornady once I have the time to complete it and do some testing.

Or make sure the primers are getting punched all the way out of the cases. Possibly screw the decapping pin down a bit more.

                    Ditto!
Every time I had the ram jamb on the down stroke it because a spent primer had not cleared the shellplate after sizing/decapping. Scew the decapping pin DOWN a little bit more.

LUBE , break the machine down from time to time and lube away . Remove old lube with metallic bits . Most of these machines are precision made instruments . All they need is a lil TLC , and they stay precise . Kroil Oil is my choice , with some grease , or waterproof ,petrol based ,viscous material of your choosing .
