Has anyone had any luck pushing an Amax 75Grn through a 1/9 twist using a 20" Barrel?

75 AMAX 1-9 Twist
Tags: None -
Will not fit in AR magazine and retain correct COL. I've single load it for 18"APR AR in 1/8 and they shoot "OK" (1.5-2.0 MOA).
I've use them in R700 Tac (1/9, 20"), and they shoot slightly be better (1-1.5 MOA).
The Amax is loaded with Varget (I think 24.5 gr. have to check my book at home). -
I will be shooting them out of a REM 700 SPS TAC.Comment

If you can get it to shoot, the A-Max is a good bullet. I used them in 20" AR Service Rifle between 200 and 600 and they shoot really well. I was actually using them as a "practice" bullet for 200 yard standing because at the time, I was getting them for dirt cheap (actually were costing me less per round than the Hornady 75gr BTHP and the PRVI 75gr BTHP).

Buy a single box and test them. Even if you load them long, a 1:9" twist is pretty slow for that bullet.
Maybe if you had a 28" tube and you could get them going faster than you would using a 20" barrel, you might stand a chance, but that's till iffy.
They shoot decently out of my 1:7" Bushy 20" .gov profile barrel, but that's a far cry from a 1:9".

yeah, maybe if he gets them going at 3000 fps, which ain't gonna happen safely
velocity plays a diminishing return on bullet stability, better to use the appropriate twist rate from the get goComment

Thanks for the input guys, Im still going to test you never know I have seen many post where people had good results. I'll keep you posted.Comment

Yeah, I don't think that you'll read of people having great results with 75gr AMAX out of a 1:9" twist. Maybe the 75gr Hornady HPBTs, but not the AMAX.
Entirely different animal.
Stick with the 68/69/70gr HPBTs and you'll still have fun out to ~600yds.

My SPS Tac would not stabilize them. Keyholed at 50 yards.Comment

I tried a couple hundred out of a 1/9 26" Savage model 12. Single load only as they sit at 2.390 oal if I remember correctly. They did OK but nowhere near as good as a 69SMK or 75gr BTHP.
The 69 SMK is more accurate inside 300yds, yet the 75gr BTHP does better in the winds beyond that.Comment
