    Hornady LnL progressive press

I'm about to backorder the above press. Other than the shell plates for each caliber do I need anything else to get going? I see that have die bushings as well. My dies are a mixture of lee, Lyman an RCBS all of which work fine in my old Lyman turret press. My question is do I need these bushings for each caliber as well, or does it make changin calibers quicker? The way I understand it they make it so you don't have to set up each die every time you switch calibers but may not be necessary.

The bushings are really worth it. Nice press, congrats.

The hornady bushings will work with any standard 7/8"-14 threaded die. To take advantage of them you will need a bushing for each die. Once you have it set, lock down the set screw and you can quickly remove and install the die as needed. Mine came with 5 bushings.

To take advantage of the bushings you will need one for each die you plan on using. This way after the dies are adjusted they can be taken out and put back.

Get bushings for all calibers, will make switching out dies fast and easy. As I recall you can get multi packs, 5 bushings in each pack I think.

If you search around, you should be able to find 6 or 10 packs of the bushings at a reasonable price. I'd also recommend the Hornady locknuts, they are a superior design to the ones with a tiny brass set screw that jams into the threads.

Some folks have troubles with Lee dies because they are so much shorter then other manufacturers, sometimes you can put the locknut underneath the bushing if this is an issue.

The press will come with everything needed for large and small primers, it has both pistol and rifle powder drop rotors. The micrometer rotor inserts are nice, but not required.

You will likely want more primer tubes, a set of SAE hex key wrenches with the speed ball end, and I find a pair of miniature needle nose pliers with the 45* bend are perfect for attaching the primer shuttle spring or removing the occasional wayward primer. Also some Hornady One Shot dry lube/cleaner to remove the preservative.

Somewhere here there's a thread about making a poor man's bullet feeder using just the Hornady bullet feed die and some clear plastic tube. The die runs about $25.

The RCBS powder check die is superior to the Hornady powder cop, but the RCBS is pistol only.

Check out powderfunnels.com for an inexpensive universal powder through expander (PTX) that will expand just about all pistol brass and open up another station. That allows me to run both a powder check and seat/crimp my revolver rounds on separate stations, which makes the press run smoother IMHO.

The case retaining spring that goes around the shell plate can be easily damaged if you catch it wrong trying to install/remove, they sell a three pack for only a few bucks. Hornady will replace it...but then you gotta wait for them to ship one.

If you have a single stage press such as a Rock Chucker, you can get an adapter to allow the Hornady bushing to work in it also. I got some stainless shims from McMaster-Carr to adjust the bushing height in my Rockchucker to match the Hornady so I don't have to adjust the dies between the two presses.

Your dies from non-Hornady manufacturers may not fit in their original boxes after installing the LnL bushing, you can get Hornady boxes for about $4 (I think) at MidwayUSA or similar to store them in. MTM also makes a nice box that will hold 12 dies plus shell holders and some other stuff.

Ikea makes a nice $10 goose neck LED light that fits perfectly in the center hole of the press and lights things up so you can check powder level. Pix or more info on request.

The case feeder is a nice addition that works well.

If you don't mind, I would like to see a pic of the LED setup you got going. That addition would help a lot.

Here's a link to the light, it also comes in red to match your press if you want. I didn't use the included base, just mounted directly to the bench instead. The light has two splined brass shafts coming out the bottom to press into the base, I just drilled the holes a little small and pressed into the bench instead.

Once all the dies are in place, they center the light over the hole. With a minor tweak you can direct the light at an angle that shines into the cases.

I use that same exact light on my Dillon, works great. I didn't take it off its base and mount it in such a cool way to the bench, but basically the same setup. Makes seeing the powder before you set the bullet, very easy.

I bought two when I was an IKEA as they were cheap ($10). The first one is going on two years. I sense the backup will be given to my heirs, still new in box...
