Definitely military, you can tell by the headstamp. If I had to guess, I would say they were training rounds of some type.

blanks? specifically to use with those red things that go in the barrel that let the gun cycle. The stuff we used in our belted guns for training looked alot like that

Do the cases mostly look like 5.56, or 7.62 NATO?

Looks like some 7.62 nato blanks. I believe they are linked for an M60.

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

While hunting at Camp Pendelton I saw mounds of those pitched into the brush.
Looked like someone got tired of hauling them around lol.

They look like blanks, those red things are BFA's and the whole military gear thing is called Miles gear.
