Taper Crimp or Roll Crimp Dies

I would like the opinion of the veteren reloaders on this forum. Taper crimp or roll crimp dies for reloading .45 acp. I will be reloading extreme 230 gr rn and Hornady 185gr hp. I will also be loading 9mm and 40 sw in the future.

Taper crimp. .45 ACP headspaces on the mouth of the cartridge. 9mm and .40 S&W also.

Taper crimp dies for the .40. You really only want to "deflare" the case from step 2 for the .40.

          +1.

For the most part, semi pistols use rimless cases and headspace on the case mouth, so a taper crimp die is what you want. As nubrun noted, you generally only want to take the belling out of the case mouth, minimal crimping is best.

There are exceptions to the above, like a Desert Eagle in 44RM, which has a rimmed case, but for run of the mill semi's, taper crimp is what you want.

To stress how little crimp you want.

If the bullet you are using has a round enough bace, berrys 230gn 45 come to mind. You can seat the bullet without belling, if you don't bell you don't have to crimp.
I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.

I may not be remembering correctly but I believe 45ACP dies will have a taper crimp and not roll crimp.

Thanks for all the replies. There are dies availlable in both taper and roll crimps.

Noted. I do know all my auto pistol dies are taper crimp and my rev type dies are roll crimp as well as my 45/70 dies. I do not crimp any other rifle ammo so do not care that the dies even have a crimp part.

Well... I've never tried it with NO belling but...

OP I will add that you should adjust your flaring die when you change headstamp and/or your bullet type. Some brass has thicker walls & lead bullets are generally .001" larger than plated/jacketed. The idea is that you want to work the brass as little as possible so your brass will last longer.

There are specs available that will tell you what the loaded round should measure at the mouth.

Not to argue with you, but I bought a box of Berry's 230 gr rn and there was no way they were going into my cases without flaring/belling first. I may not have much experience reloading, only about a year now, but I've never seen a bullet seat into a case without flaring/belling first.

I would love to meet up with you and have you show me/prove me wrong sir!
