hi im new to reloading and i was looking in to buying powder im looking for a mini 14 and a rossi .44 mag lever act can i use the same powder and will this be an ok powder to use http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hodgd...h-All+Products if not can some one direct me to the right powder thru cabellas since i already have a big order coming thru them already thanks in advance the help is much appreciated

.44 is a pistol round and .223 is a rifle round. I can't think of a powder that will work well in both. compleatly different burn rates.

Welcome to the forum! Did you really mean to post a link to H50BMG? That powder isn't good for either cartridge. Also, powder selection has to do with both the cartridge and the bullet weight. It has almost nothing to do with the type of firearm it will be used in. I don't mean to scare you away from here nor do I mean to come off like a complete ask hole but, you shouldn't start reloading until you understand the concepts involved in reloading a little better. PLEASE get a reloading manual or two and read them. Then, if you can, find someone near you to help you get started and mentor you later. If you are in LA or Ventura County, I would be more than willing to get you started.

223= Win 748 or H-335 or 223CFE

44mag = mag loads H-110 Mild loads Unique or one of many other powders

If you do not have one get a reloading manual and look to see what works well. I suggest Lyman#49. If you have a manual do the same.
Another newbie without a location. How do they expect real help. If you are near me I will be happy to help you out getting supplies selected, setting up your stuff and learning to load. Asking that question shows you have allot to learn and there are people here that will be willing to help you.

The only powder that came up on the link above was International Clays, which I assume is the only Hodgdon powder in stock at this time at Cabela's. It would not be a powder you would want to use for either of your loads.

There is a kind of panic going on right now, so powders don't last long in stock.

What is your intended use for the Rossi? Cowboy shooting, hunting, etc. This will affect the optimal powder choice for that caliber, you will get really different results depending on the powder choice.

On the 223, there are a number of good choices. What weight bullet were you planning to load (have on order) for that Mini-14? Again the optimal powder choice will depend on such decisions. Nowadays, you may not have a lot of choices, but at least you will kow what to look for and what is ideal.

As others have offered, getting a reloading guide (like Lyman's 49th or Lee 2nd Edition) is a great investment. It will teach you everything you need to know and come with a lot of load data, giving you answers to your first questions.

i have a manual tho its at my brothers house and i haven't got a chance to read it yet i do have another manual that will be here Friday. my brother and my dad bother are avid re loaders so they will be helping me and since we all live on the same ranch it shouldn't be an issue

Probably better to find out what he wants to do with the loaded rounds and the Rossi before plunking down the dough. As Divernhunter mentioned above, for real .44RM velocities, powders like H110/W296 or AA #9 are best. For lower velocity lead loads (Cowboy shooting for instance), something like Unique or even Trailboss will be what you want and will deliver very different results than the first few named. Even a powder like W231 will deliver nice target loads in the 44RM.

For the 223, again the usual suspects listed by Divernhunter will work great. For a complete list of what works at a given bullet weight (not bad to know that while shopping around for anything available), go to:

I use Unique for 44 mag pistol rounds for my brother, but this probably burns too fast for a rifle round. I use IMR 4227 for my 44 mag Ruger rifle rounds. For the Mini 14 with 55g FMJ, I have excellent success with 21.5 g of IMR 4198. Lyman makes a very good manual with good data for accuracy loads for each bullet weight. Getting some help to get started is good advice. I think Angeles Shooting Range also have classes on reloading as well as a good reloading store. Good luck.

W296 for the .44 mag is what I always use.

For my Mini 14, I like to load a bunch of stuff. Accurate 2230, Hodgdon BLC2, 322, CFE223, Winchester 748, IMR 4198 (same exact load as WXL posted)
