You sure that's length isn't for some round nose hunting buller?

Try seating out to at least 2.805" and depending on your leade/throat length (and magazine length) 2.840"+, even with the 185s.

2.745" for a flying dart is way too short and you're chewing up case capacity in doing so, not to mention potentially spiking pressure.

I was just going by the book, the max col it shows for .308 win is 2.810

I'd seat those 185gr Bergers out as far as you can safely seat them and still be mag safe.

At least 2.810" and you can probably cheat a little farther out.

That's a hunting bullet there and those numbers don't apply to sleek target bullets.

With 44.4gr of win760 and the 185gr bullets I would have a col of 2.970 without compressing

When I am OK single loading, I load very long, in some of my barrels that means an OAL closer to 2.950" (which is pretty close to the lands on my stock guns when loading something like a 178gr HPBT Hrn Match). Obviously these rounds won't fit in the magazine.

As far as compressing, it is not a problem compressing powder, although with fine ball powder you aren't going to get a bunch of extra space by compressing.

The biggest gain you will see is getting away from those mil-surp brass and going with a commercial headstamp with ample volume. I have had good luck with Hornaday Match when I am trying to pack a very full case.

              In late but,
Berger Manual, page 690, lists 185 grain bullets with Winchester 760 powder:
Starting load - 42.0 grains at 2337 FPS
Maximum load - 46.8 grains at 2620 FPS

              Good Luck
