    5.7x28 reloading

I'm picking up an FN 57 and was thinking about finally getting into reloading due to the cost and availability of 5.7x28 ammo. Is this a difficult round to reload for someone that is new to reloading?

The FN 5.7 has a unusual operating system. This causes the case to stretch at the shoulder quite a large amount. The usual factory ammo once fired case that I have measured will have the shoulder moved forward about .050" +_ .005". This is a very large shoulder movement to have to correct at the sizing die. You will need to check the case in a case gauge or factory barrel compared to factory ammo to be sure. This stretch will case the case to lengthen after resizing so always check and trim to length. Go easy on the velocity. Have fun. Easy.

All I can say is BE CAREFUL, BE CONSERVATIVE and do your due diligence! I have read about no less than a half a dozen Kabooms with the FN 57 and in each case, it was reloaded ammo that caused it. It sticks in my mind because I first saw this gun on Top Shot, thought it was cool and did some research into it. Great gun.

Not for a beginner. Really not even good for a long time reloader. Case life very short due to shoulder movement. Very touchy about the load data. I have dies for mine but not sure if I want to reload for it due to the risks. It will be the only cartridge I would not roll my own for. I have been reloading for many years and load for about 35 different cartridges.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

              check this out

I have not loaded 5.7x28 but from what I do know about it I am comfortable saying it is not a good starting caliber.
I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.

I was thinking, would it be possible to load 5.7 with trail boss?

from my experience with is it is a really safe powder and should not reach anywhere close to the 50,000 psi of 5.7.

it probably won't be smoking fast like factory 5.7 but if you could get a light bullet to 1200 FPS it would probably be good for plinking.

                BUT would it cycle?

I just started loading for the five seven, it is not an easy cartridge to reload. A few pointers: Don't worry about the crimped primer pockets, the brass last longer if you don't use max loads. The dies strip a lot of the lacquer coating off when you resize. Elite Ammo has some useful tools for reloading this cartridge.
