Storing brass
FOR SALE: XD45, 24/47 Yugo Mauser, AK RPD AES-10bTags: None -
I store mine in the Platic Buckets that the cat litter comes in.. Good Size buckets plus they come with lids...Originally posted by tankermanI think most folks bubba their AR's because they watch too many action movies, play too many video games and don't understand how to socialize properly, so they fantasize about being 'action hero's'. Kind of like little girls playing dress-up.Originally posted by Douglas711Is everybody stocking up on guys now? Just curious some gun prices seem to be getting high.Comment

I put them in ziplock bags at the range and when I get home I tumble them before I put them in large stackable clear bins with lids and label the bins.

5 gallon buckets outside. BUT, make sure they are sealed! I've got a few buckets that got water in them and the wet brass will start to oxidize very quickly. I keep my 50BMG brass inside except for the stuff that's filling up my truck crossbox. Of course, that's just MG fired mixed headstamp stuff so, I'm not that worried about it.Last edited by CSACANNONEER; 04-16-2008, 11:40 AM.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

I keep my picked up brass in old ammo cans. After I sort it it goes in gallon ziplocks, then after cleaning it goes in those clear shoebox size Sterilite containers that you pick up at the 99 cent store for a dollar. I have to say the 5 gallon bucket with ziplock bags inside is a good idea!

I was worried about oxidation/discoleration in storage. As some of my pick ups are a bit tarnished, so I was wondering if that could spread.FOR SALE: XD45, 24/47 Yugo Mauser, AK RPD AES-10bComment

it can. Discard it or remove the tarnished/oxidized. Don't use unlined metal buckets or ungalvanized trash cans. Galvanic reaction between disimilar metals will occur. Yup, there's lots of hoarders out there that's beyond 5gal buckets already

i use tupperware containers that you get from target/walmart... they hold quite a bit and they stack fairly well.. even when they're full..
for a bit I was sorting my brass into 4 main piles.. 9mm, 40, 45, and everything else.. with each of these lots, I was placing them into their separate bins.. Cleaned and uncleaned 9. cleaned/uncleaned 40..etc etc..
It's a hassle but how you store it will make it more/less easy for you later depending on how much you want to reload..
I would love to have all the brass sorted, but realistically.. Im only shooting 9mm right now, so thats all I really need.. the rest is just straight "whoring"..
Personally, i like the square tupperware containers to buckets.. but do whatever is cheaper/easier for you..Aloha snackbar!Comment

Although I understand that oxidation is something that happens on the surface of metal and that per a couple of metalurgists I know, it's very hard for oxidation to eat into brass, I've erred on the side of caution. Specially when it comes to 50BMGs. I have 30 rounds of NEW 50BMG that ended up in a box with a small bottle of aquious (sp?) ammonia for two days. I'm still reasearching to find out if these rounds are safe to shoot or not. I really hate loosing 30 rounds of brand new brass. On the other hand, my safty is worth more than the brass.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor
