WOW! now is not the time to start reloading
Tags: None -
No, but it's a great time to sell. -
That's nothing.
You must have missed 'the great FGMM 210M primer shortage of '08-'09,' when the DOD started specing 210Ms for the M-118LR ammo and they dried up along with 215Ms.
1k cartons were SELLING for $230-$250 a pop and people were buying.
Problem with powders and primers, is is that you can't ship them via UPS/FedEx without a HazMat certification and that's like $500 to acquire.
People were (are) being setup and busted.

I'm just now getting a feel for how cyclical the supplies of this stuff can be. First gun show visit was about a year back, and I briefly looked at all the people buying several thousand primers, jugs of powder, etc and wondered to myself what the big rush was. $20-25 per k, as I recall.
Little did I know.Comment

Wow, that is crazy! I've only been reloading for about 4 months now and I sure am glad I got a couple of cases of primers in January when they were only $120 each and available locally.Comment

You just need to shop around. Gunbroker is not the place right now to buy unless you have disposable income. Grafs and sons still has 5000 primer bricks in .217 Berdan for $113. I could not find them anywhere else. Just spend some time searching the net and you will find better deals.sigpic"There is no greater feel than to be in control of 56 tons of steel and watching that 105mm round go down range and blow something up."Comment

Wow, I just browsed the powder area on Brokegunner... 2 8# jugs of H4895 are currently $585 plus $48 shipping, and the auction isn't over yet!!NRA Life Member - CRPA Life Member - NRA Certified RSO - USN Veteran
I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Hmmm.. I see dollar signs in my eyes as I have an unopened 8# jug of 4895! But then again, I bought it to use, not to sell. Still ... $300 ... for $150 (or whatever) worth of stuff! LOL!==================

It's pretty much not a good time to do much of anything with guns for the last 3 months. People that were into the gun culture previous to the last election; they're doing OK if they "bought it cheap and stacked it deep." Now, nothing is available. You can't even buy a reloading press without waiting for the backorder to come in; at a price that is 30% more than when the troubles started....Comment

Well, reloading is still cheaper than pay crazy prices for loaded ammo.
.223 is going for what, a buck a round now?! With the components, it's still way cheaper. In fact now than ever is it worth reloading!==================

Supplies
I've been able to find primers through the 4 sale section here that are reasonable, but not powder. I got a pound of Winchester 296 for my M1 Carbine from Ammo Bros. yesterday ($21), but that was about all they had for rifles. Buying online is hard to find and spendy, once you add in the Hazmat fees.
Hopefully, local suppliers will begin to get stuff in stock soon.Comment

I've not been reloading long, maybe 5 years, but I miss the days of $15 for 1000 Winchester primers. I've been on both sides of this, being over-the-top frustrated at lack of supplies, people gouging/hoarding, and overall price increases... and the other sides of spending lots of time looking and scoring great deals on primers and powder -but it takes time and patience. I've used three things to help me: 1) watch calguns like a hawk, when deals come up, and friendly calgunners notify us quickly of stock on hand you got to be there to jump on it. I just scored 10000 SRP's thanks to a post on calguns, for $22/1000 shipped. 2) get on all the email notification lists and watch your email like a hawk. 3) visit lots of gun shops, go at different times/days... its a hassle but you will get lucky from time to time. I recently drove from Salt Lake City to San Diego and manage to find 2 lbs of Varget, and 1000 WLP primers along the way. I don't recommend that route for the casual reload buyer (11 hour drive), but you get the point.
Last, keep shooting, this nutty-ness will pass - keep enjoying the hobby and don't let things get you down. Nothing makes me feel better than a little trigger time.sigpicComment

I've been handloading since the 1970s, this is the third panic-driven market I've been through. No, right now is not the time to start reloading, but this won't last forever. Patience, and you will be rewarded with a life-long hobby. But don't pay stupid prices. Geez, $585 for a jug of powder?????
Funny, but last spring I went through my inventory and thinned it out a bit, had a few partially used 1 lb bottles that made good fertilizer.....Comment
