    Golden West Brass

Does anyone know if you can do a local pickup at Golden West Brass? They dont have any contact info on their site. I am only like 15 minutes away from their address on their site and was hoping I could avoid shipping charges.

I used to pick it up in person all the time at their old location. It's best to give them a call and ask since the business is now run by the son of the guy I dealt with. He also used to give me a discount if I paid him cash.

Where was the old location? The location on the site is in El Monte. Also, do know know how I could get that phone number and if it would be the same for their new place? Thanks.

Never mind: one of the contact links was taking me somewhere other than their contact info but I clicked on another one and I see some phone numbers so ill give them a call tomorrow. Thanks again.

I don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but I'm curious. How do you rate their bullets?

Honestly, i havent used them yet. I have heard some good things about them though. I know some people use them in 3 gun competition which is why i am getting them. From what i understand they are a better than plinking buletts but nowhere near a premium bullet like a SMK. No worries about the hi-jack as I would also like to hear peoples opinions on them.

I have heard people mention a cash discount if you show up in person. It looks like their prices have gone up since they have redone their website. If you receive a cash discount, let us know how good a deal you receive. It might make a road trip worthwhile.

I'm still using up Golden West 55gr FMJ-BT bullets I purchased 5 years ago for $30 per 1000.
              The bullets are "ok" quality.
              Nothing to write home about.
The price is good enough that it was not worth paying $10 to $15 more for winchesters at the time.

Show up with cash for the best deal.

So would you recommend them? Right now i am using cheap hornady 55gr bullets I bought off midway for 79.99/1000. I kinda wanted to try out the heavier bullets because i think it will work better with my ramshot tac powder. Do you use them in 3 gun comp? I have a 1/7 twist barrel so I can afford to go with heavier bullets but I dont want to a ton of money on premium bullets when starting out.

EDIT: If i do buy from golden west I will buy their 62gr fmj's.

I stick with 55's for all my 3gun rifle ammo because they are cheap and you burn a lot of them.
One load means one zero and one trajectory to know.
Switching between multiple bullet weights just complicates matters.

I bought some Hornady 55's a few months ago for $57 per 1000.
I'll be switching to those when the Golden West bullets are used up.
I read some good reviews on the Hornady bullets.

Midway had Ramshot Exterminator for $11 a pound a few weeks ago.
I snagged 8lbs as part of a 50lb powder order my buddy put together.

Im trying to figure out what I want and am doing load development and once I find something that I like i am going to just load a ton of it. Once I find a bullet that I like ill stick with it. The 55gr hornady's I have now are ok. They seem to be a good buy for what you get but they werent even close to being as good as some black hills match ammo that I compared them to at the same velocity. I saw that Exterminator on sale about a week after i bought the tac but I still got a good deal on the tac. I guess i will maybe get some golden west and compare it to the 55gr hornady's that I have now and then make my decision.

FWIW, I tested 5 different brands and weights of low cost .224s and the Hornady 55gr Spire Point w/cann was the most accurate. They were shot from 16" 1/7, 1/9 and 24" 1/8 at 50yds & 100yds.

Thanks, thats very helpful. I think im just gonna stick with the hornady's then.

Midwayusa has the best deal if you buy in bulk of 6k or 8k.

                            FWIW,
I have used both Hornady and Golden West. Both are good with a slight edge to Hornady.

If you are loading for self defense or hunting, I would go with the Hornady. They have a much thinner jacket than the Golden West, so I believe they are much more likely to fragment. I can not test this anytime soon, but I am almost positive that the Golden West Bullets will not fragment in flesh. The composition of the bullet is very much like the Prvi ones that Widener's is selling and those have been proven to not frag properly.
