Depending how much you shoot and how much time and money you have I would say either the 650 or 550. I have a 550 because I load a lot of different calibers and it is less expensive to change calibers on a 550.

Those are two of the primary reasons I selected a 550 also. Caliber changes are frequent, and the 550 is simpler and more economical in that respect.

A new side benefit I've recently gained is the simplicity in which the 550 can be used in single-stage mode. I've been working up some precision rounds lately and thus doing a lot of hand charges, so it has been easy to set up a toolhead with a two-die set and load batches individually.

I started on the XL 650 over a year ago, and am extremely glad I didn't go with the 550 due to how many rounds I can crank out in 9mm, or .223 per hour...

The only issue I really had was before I bought a swager for crimped .mil primer pockets, and forcing primers causing powder spill.

I have almost made the cost of the press back in just over a year with a total Dillon cost for 2 calibers @ about $1400 (not including trimmer, tumbler, and such).

If you are only going to get 1 loader get the 650.

I had a 550 and upgraded to the 650 mainly for the auto indexing and powder check capability. I had several squid rounds where my powder dispenser was inconsistently not dispensing powder on the 550. If I wasn't paying attention when I was shooting (rapid firing), I could have easily exploded my barrel with the next bullet hitting stuck bullet in the barrel. After that, I sold the 550 and upgraded to the 650.

I've been VERY happy with the upgrade, reload faster, and have the added safety of auto indexing and mainly the powder check for double or zero charge.
