    H4831 for .308?

    Now I know there are better powders for the .308 so don't mention them. I also know that it can be done, even though you would fill the case at 46gr-50gr with only 2100fps-2500fps and only 80% of the powder being burned. "Not optional, powder burns too slow, and low velocity" Given the scarcity of powder and my access to 10lbs of H4831. Ive heard of shooting such loads out of bolt actions, but can it be shot safely and reliably out of an AR 10? I have both 16'' and 20'' barrels.

    I have had good luck with 30.06 loads using 4831 but I don't know if I would use it in .308 with anything under 168gr pills, I would find someone that loads 270 / 7mm / 300RM etc. and see if they have powder that you could trade.
    Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?
    A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

    You live in California. There's always more crazy. It's a renewable resource.

      You could get BlueDot to work in a 308 if you took enough time and had enough weapons on hand to experiment with, after you blew up the first few.

      Too slow.

      Why don't you buy it and try and trade it to somebody that needs it?

      I love H-4831sc in my 338LM and 7 RemMag loads.

      Would you start clogging the gas tube with unburnt powder?

      Buy a pound and see what you see.

      I'm sure you'll be one of the pioneers who uses H-4831 in a 308 Win in a gas gun. Smacks of desperation, but you'll be writing the manual, Sparky.

        From my old Hogdgon manual #6 he say:
        110gr speer = 50g = 2509fps = 29k pressure
        130gr speer = 50gr = 2510 = 30k
        150gr speer = 50gr == 2575 = 37k -- notice the large jump in pressure -
        165gr speer = 50gr == 2469 = 39k
        180gr speer = 49gr == 2455 == 43k
        this is less powder than his previous data sheets -- the charge was then about 53gr for the same bullets --
        Mind you this data is from when the powder first became somewhat common -
        Earlier hogdon data sheets did not list 308 at all -- It was too new!
        My batch, a shared 25pound keg cost the grand sum of fifty cents a pound. Actually still have some -- never liked it --
        I have no opinion on the use in AR's but of course it was used in garands and rem autos -- there was certainly no disclaimer then.

          In the lyman load manuals they list 4831 in the .308 with bullets starting at 180 grain and up. I dont know if it will function your weapon or not. If it were me I would use the long barrell and a heavy bullet. Start at the min and work up, you may have to use a drop tube to get a full charge in the case but it can be done. I have used 4831 in the M1a and M1 both and they functioned, with the heavier bullets.
