    Unique for 45-70

For awhile I've been loading 4198 for my 45-70 loads, and even at the lower ends of the scale pushing the 410 grain projectile around 12-1400 fps was just un forgiving on my shoulder (out of my 1895CB and my Buffalo Classic - both with metal buttplates).

I had read about a lot of cast shooters using Unique, around 11-13 grains under a 405 grain cast bullet and that speeds are below 1000 fps that produce almost zero recoil.

Recently I had tried out some loads with this recipe and while the 11-12 grain loads were very slow (literally *bang*....................then clang). I have no chrono, but assume the shots must be moving in the 900 fps range.

Accuracy wasn't great so I started working up - I found a great load today of 13.5 grains of unique with the 405 cast bullets. Great thing is they shoot really well out of both my guns.

I shot for around 3 hours today, putting around 90 rounds of 45-70 down range. Shoulder doesn't feel like I did anything out of the ordinary.

I've only been reloading for about a year - and today was the first time I really felt like my reloads worked like magic.

Congratulations, it is nice to be able to enjoy a gun/caliber that you otherwise might not as much if you weren't reloading. My .44RM also falls into this category. I really like nice light <1000fps target load with my Model 29. Shooting full house loads I lose interest in a couple of cylinders worth.

I'll have to keep that 45-70 recipe in my book. I was searching for a good light load as well. I settled on 12gr of trail boss with the 405 gr cast from xtreme. It's a fun load also.

        H or IMR 4198?

I just started reloading 45-70 for my Marlin 1895. I'm using 300gr Hornady flat nose with 44.6 grains. I was looking into buying 250 400gr cast bullets but can't find loading data. What she best source with a wide variety for the 1895 45-70?

        Thanks

My favorite load to shoot in my 1895 is 14gr of Unique under a 405gr boolit from my Lee mold. Very accurate with mild recoil!
