Reload Pricing for .45 acp

WOW....is it really worth it to reload?
With the prices of bullets, and brass.....hell, its only like $.05 cheaper than Walmarts WWB or CCI brass if .45 cal.

Am I just buying from the wrong vendors?

FMJ bullets are like $80 per 500 ct.

No.... just the bullet (unloaded) in a pack of 500 is $80. Now that is $0.16 each, and that doesnt include the primer, brass or powder? Not to mention the Dillon machine.

Montana Gold has 1k 230gr FMJ's for $141 shipped. Throw in roughly $20 for primers and $20 for powder and you've got yourself 1k rounds for $181 assuming you've already got brass. You DO save your brass right?

My 45acp is in the $6-$10 for a box of 50 depending on bullet and when I bought the components. Got a couple hundred lbs. of lead too. I will supplement the components I have with cast. A good deal comes along from time to time and you should buy it when you can to hedge future costs.

I think everybody is stocking up to have enough to last a year or two when metals come back down some. If you try to add it all up, it doesn't look like a good deal, but don't think about it unless you are going to be fair and amortize costs over 15 years or more. I enjoy it for the hobby aspect, but if it would make you feel better, be assured that dillon and the other top equipment sells very easily so it isn't a bad way to tie up some money.

get an aftermarket bbl (I've sent a few lead wadcutters down the barrel of my HK-just not too many at a time).

But seriously, get an aftermarket barrel with lands and grooves. Lead bullets are half the cost from the same company.

I personally have no clue how to reload or the time for it. its easier to buy the ammo for me. probably for lots of people its the same. i save my brass in a big 5 gallon bucket. i woudl liek to learn how to reload but so far i dont shoot enough to warrant reloading. if you shoot a lot then yeah its probably a worthwile investment but if you dont shoot all the time then its easier to buy them over the counter

You need to step up and get some more "specialized" calibers.

I save about $2 per cartridge when I load 500S&W loads.

Beyond the savings, the customization features outweigh the savings all day long. You can find the most accurate load for your specific guns. If it was about saving money I'd have never gotten into it. I probably have $3500 into Dillon parts alone.

The savings of shooting lead bullets is worth the cost of a replacement barrel.

I pay around $60 per 1000 lead 45 bullets.
Say a barrel costs $200.
That's a $100 per 1000 savings compared to your $80 per 500 for condom bullets.
You break even at 2000 rounds which is not much.

If you were paying 1/3 the cost for your ammo, you probably WOULD shoot more.
The whole deal with reloading is that you have to want to do it in order to make your own ammo specifically tuned for your own uses.
The fact that you shoot 3 times as much for the same money is a side effect, not a main objective.
