    Loading 124g hp

    I have 124g hp from Berrys and am wondering if I can load it as I load my 124g round nose with 231? Due to the bullet profile, will my powder charge need to change to stay safe? None of my load books refer to hollow point.

    Thanks

    One of the most popular recipes for a 124gr HP is 4.3gr W231 @ 1.125". My G34 eats it up.

      As long as your load recipe is not at or near max you will be fine by duplicating seating depth (not OAL). Assuming RN is longer than JHP, you measure how much longer RN is and subtract that from the OAL you used with RN then seat to that new OAL and seating depth will be same. If HP is longer, add that to old OAL and that will be new OAL to achieve same seating depth.

      The trick here is to end up with base of HP bullet at same depth in case as RN was before.

      If your original recipe was at or near a max charge, drop a couple tenths just to be sure even if you dupe seating depth.

        I had some feeding trouble with these... Try experimenting with the OAL

        When you load them they look extremely long

          Because of the change in profile of the bullet, it is possible that the bearing surface also changed, if the length of the bearing surface changes, wouldn't that change the amount of friction the bullet has on the barrel and thus affect pressure as well? Don't know how much that changes anything though.

            Based on this:
            RN=0.60" HP=0.56"

            My Standard Load -> 124g Berry's RN 4.3g of 231 @1.150" (Average Velocity of 1047.3 fps)

            Load with 124g Berry's HP should have a COL @ 1.110" ???

              Just use the same load you were using with the RN if it fed in your gun. You might see a slight change in velocity (down) from the shallower seating, no big deal. You have a lot of room for error with that load.
