    .270 reduced loads

heres the new project i've started, the search for a small game load out of my .270 win.

This was shot with 6 grains of unique, a sierra 90 gr. HP. and a CCI magnum pistol primer @30 yards

    the chrono read
    1. 776
    2. 876
    3. 805
    4. 884
    5. 641

I'm shooting for about 900-950 fps. If I can find a way to keep the powder at the back of the cartridge I should get more consistant velosites.
Anyone have an idea on how to keep the powder at the back of the case.

Have you thought about Trail Boss? You can load up to 100% of the case volume under the bullet, and not go too hot. Start at 70% of the volume. It is very bulky powder. It looks like little cheerios. I have used it in 30-06 with a 150 grain jacketed bullet and got 1200 fps. It works in any cartridge and is made for applications like this. I also use it for light loads in my 460 magnum.

You might try a filler such as dacron fiber. I have read about it, but haven't tried it. Using trail boss is easier.

AA2700, 41.5 grain range under a 135gr projectile. Varget is good too.

Proper velocities for .270 are in the 2700-2850fps range. .270 properly loaded has a point blank zero factor in the 300 yard range. This means + - 3" above/below sight plane out to 300 yards.

I shoot .270 as my preferred long distance cartridge. It has a great sectional density ratio (high BC) and when properly utilized is a fantastic long distance cartridge.

Only downside to .270 is long bolt throw when cycling action, the cartridge itself is a ballistic winner.

BTW, 1200 FPs in .270 sux hind teat, if you are not getting 2500+ fps, go home and stay home!

to the original question, either tip the rifle back before every shot fired or put packing in the case. Cotton fibre or shredded cardboard will work as packing. You need to stuff the case with with either powder or packing or powder will lay where it will.

Might as well use .223 if you are looking for mouse hunting loads.

Guys I know that run very light charges in the rifle loads down around 1200fps (usually so they can shoot lead and save money), usually use a paper wad. They cut a round dot somewhat larger than the case diameter. They use a punch to push the paper down in the case, that keeps the powder down by the primer. A favorite powder for this application is IMR 4198.

Personally, for shorter ranges I have always thought the .22LR a terrific choice.

          Good luck, have fun.

another vote for trail boss. I have not used it for 270 but I have used it in 308 and every hand gun caliber I load.

            Check this out.

I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.

I read somewhere that Speer stopped printing charges for exceedngly light loads due to concerns that the bullet might not leave a barrel, and 600-900 fps is in this ballpark. It's just going to take once to convince you that this is not a good idea.

Hodgdon says try using 60% of whatever they state as a maximum load of h-4895 for a starting load and work up as high as you want until you are back at the max. That should get you 1500-2000 fps and a safe zone of velocity

Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to give trailboss a closer look.
bill, I agree the .22 is teriffic but its quite hard to carry 2 rifles in the high country when deer hunting. I'm just looking for a light load to carry for the ocasional snowshoe hare for the pot.
Oh and i'm still trying to to keep the velocity below at least 1100fps.

Geoff, It IS a fine cartridge and I have been using it almost exclusively for most of 25 years, my standard load is a 140 gr. A-frame at 2950 fps.

I think you will like the TrailBoss. I use it in 8X56R, 8X57 and 30-06. Next project 7.62X54R... I am more then happy with the accuracy at 50yds..
