    Rock island jamming with swc

I just bought some 200 grain moly swc to plink with, I loaded with 5 grains of win 231 with an oal of 1.25. I have alot of failure to feed with this setup, mostly on the last round but sometimes in the middle of the mag, when i smacked the bottum of the magazine most of the time the round seated but not all of the time, think is this a ammo problem or a magazine problem? i was using the factory act mag a springfield mag and a cmc shooting star.

Combination of both, if its the GI model, no feed ramp so the WC hangs up. Also the factory mag is usually a POS. Might try getting a + power wolf recoil spring or gettinf=g the frame ramped and polished.

You might try loading a little bit longer, as long as it fits in the magazine.

          +1

I load my 200gr LSWC's 1.265"-1.270" OAL. Also, try crimping so the OD at the case mouth is .469" (Wilson Combat spec).

          Good luck.

It might be that he has to load shorter but I run my SWC, same as Bill Steele, at 1.265 and it runs through every 45 I've got, Springfield, Para and Colt.

Must only be certain GI models. I have one with the feed ramp, only issue I ever had were with reloads (and only a few).

OP, do you have the Act-Mags on that Rock Island?

Could be shorter or longer. I say load 10-20 each of multiple lengths and run them to see which ones work. If none work start eliminating feeding device problems from the gun.

I run SWC in my RIA compact at 1.18 COAL. Started at 1.25 and then continued reduced COAL until they ran reliably. Those loads run fine in my CZ 97B as well.

What bullet? Not all 200gr SWC are the same. Where the nose contacts the chamber wall during feeding affects the geometry and reliability. A #68 pattern SWC is generally reliable at 1.250" OAL. If you increase the OAL you may have too much shoulder sticking out of the case mouth and the round won't chamber.

I think your problem is the round is underpowered for the factory recoil spring. Or you may be limp wristing the pistol. Or it could be a mag issue or an extractor issue. I would increase the powder charge first. 5grs is kinda light for a 200.

I agree that the charge is light. I run 5.1grs of 231 as a minimum load under lead 200gr SWC, and the moly coat will likely want another tenth or two of powder. I'd up the charge a bit before I started experimenting with OAL, especially if the stoppages are that the gun is just slightly out of battery.

I have the same feeding issue with my Sig 1911 and CZ97B when I load the SWC 1.25" OAL but with 1.21" OAL the feeding is fine.
