    .308 150gr FMJ load?

    Hi guys,

I know i probably should have looked into this before buying these things, but i bought a case of Hornady 150gr BTFMJ in 308. Anybody have a good load for this using Varget and Fed Gold Medal primers?
For some other kinda 150gr bullet, the Hogdon website suggests 44gr of Varget. Think this'll be a safe load?

    Thanks!

44gr for a starting load or for a do not exceed load? If your source just lists one load, reduce it by 10% and work up (in 0.1gr or 0.2 gr increments) from there watching for pressure signs as well as when they achieve the best accuracy.

42gr Varget... why use excessive powder if you don't need it......

Ok, the Hogdon website suggests 44-47gr of Varget for a Nos BT. I'm assuming that's a Nosler boat tail.... Granted, there are a lotta Nos Bt's but i guess all are the same shape....
Should i just start at 42gr and work up?

Everything depends on what distances you want to shoot.... That will determine the velicity goal... fi all you plan on shooting is 200yds, you don't need screaming velocities..for 200yds on all my 308's my velocity is about 2425fps.... this is with a 168gr SMK and Varget (39.5gr) I use this load also with the Nosler165gr BT's and have won my share of Shiloutte matches withthis load out of my Rem700VS.

I use 44 grn RE15 behind 155 Scenars in FGMM cases, w/ 210Ms. Varget has a similar burn rate. If you're using med capacity cases (FGMM, REM LCLR, LC Match Lapua) I'd suggest startig at 42 and working your way up looking for accuracy and pressure.

Gotcha, i'll make a batch using 44gr of Varget. 42gr would probably suffice, but a lil more bang is always nice.

Is this for a bolt gun or a gas gun? 42gr should work just fine in most any gasgun out there.

Every lot of powder is a little different and you should always start on the low side and work your way up. Just because a load is safe in one gun doesn't mean it is safe in your gun. Please, be safe and work your loads up instead of blowing up.
