9mm SPM Load Data

I am new to the reloading game and have done my research and read Lees reloading book. Their chapter on primers states to never substitute standard primers for magnum unless the load data calls for it. I am interpreting this as meaning, that I can develop my own load data to use magnum primers in my 9mm Luger load data.

Here is what I have loaded.

9mm 115gr RN Rainier bullets
Federal 1x fired brass
Titegroup powder at 3.5-3.7gr. (Min is 3.9 so I backed it down to experiment with the magnum primers)
Federal small pistol magnum primers

I have yet to fire these, but I was wondering what do the wiser on this website think?

What is your OAL. OAL has a lot to do with Preasurres

As long as your OAL is within spec you should be fine.

Oal is min of 1.100, max I measured was 1.128

Titegroup is a little temperamental powder, so as you work up the ladder you need to stop short of maxmum. According to Hodgdon's load data on their website, start loads for the bullets you are using is more like 4.5gr, so you have a very large safety margin. Your loads may not cycle in your gun, if they won't, you can safely move up to start levels and things will likely start operating well.

The question about OAL is a wise one, especially with Titegroup. If I were you, for the 115gr bullet, I would load closer to 1.130"-1.140" OAL. It will give you a little more margin for bullet setback during feed operations and likely will feed better out of your magazines.

For years I have been running 4.0 grains of TiteGroup behind either 125 TC Bear Creek moly or 115 JHP Montana Golds at an AOL of 1.155" The 125's go about 1,180 FPS out of my G34. Doesn't seem to make any difference between regular small primers and magnum small primers. TiteGroup is one of fastest powders though, http://www.reloadbench.com/burn.html, so you have to be carefull with AOL

Range report

Best load I shot was with 3.9 gr titegroup and federal small pistol primer magnums. All shot out of a SP2022.

I use 4.0 grains of titegroup with a 115gr Extreme bullet using Tula Magnum primers.

I'm just glad that nothing went wrong, these were my first reloads I have ever shot. I'm pretty pleased with myself and my new hobby right now.

Of note, Winchester sp magnums made more of a muzzle flash, but no noticeable recoil or percussion.
