    Best brands of ammo

Here's a question for those of you with years of experience, what are the top brands of ammo that you completely trust in your weapons? Which brands would you never use? All I've ever used is Cor Bon and Remington for my .38 and 9mm but its getting tougher to find ammo. I just want to make sure I don't cycle bad stuff through my guns.

Thank you, in advance, for your help!

Ive never had a problem with any brand of ammo. Wolf has always worked great for me, and that would be considered bottom of the barrel. Some of the best stuff out there is military surplus, depending on the military.

If your concerned about harming your gun with the ammo you use, i can assure you its not that big of a deal.

Corrosive ammo is fine as long as you clean your gun afterwards

Steel ammo will wear down your bore faster, but its still many thousands of rounds and new barrels arent terribly expensive for most guns. Especially compared with how much you save buying steel ammo.

Dirty ammo wont do any harm either, just clean your gun after you shoot it.

Never shot any ammo that i wouldnt use again.

I don't quite get what answer you are looking for. Are you talking defense, target, or plinking ammo.

for plinking ammo as long as it cycles

for target as long as it cycles and is accurate

for defense as long as it cycles, is accurate, and has good terminal performance

when it comes to any particular ammo that I tend to stay away from because they don't cycle. I stay away from the 115gn 9mm bargain ammo like Walmart federal champion, and WWB. I find they can often be under powered which is not a good combo in my gen 4 glock 19 which has an over powered recoil spring.

in the end, buy a few boxes of anything, shoot it, if it shoots well buy a case or two.
I will share my opinion and my load data, BUT I am just a guy with too many cigars and too many guns. Whatever I say is probably wrong.

i can honestly say that remington umc has been absolute garbage for me in very reliable handguns otherwise. newer winchester white box has given me a little trouble too, but not as much as the umc. in comparison, tula has been 100% reliable, as well as federal, which is getting hard to come by. bear in mind, this is in 4 different pistols, the .40 cals being a s&w sigma .40 and an hk usp40 compact, and a sig p220 and ruger p97 .45s. all had notable failures to eject/feed when a notably weak round fired extremely low compared to the rest. it was very easy to tell but shows the inconsistency in loading. at first it was about once a mag, then it got to be every other round. again, without cleaning, the pistols all funtioned perfectly with steel-cased tula in both .40 and .45.

My own reloads are what I use these days. That said, I've shot Remington, Wolf/Tulammo, Winchester, Prvi Partizan, CCI Blazer Brass, Magtech, and military surplus from various countries. All of them go bang nicely. You'll be fine with any of them.

I tend to stick to Winchester or Federal for 9mm and .45. For .22 it's pretty individual but a lot of people have trouble with Remington and Winchester bulk ammo. For rifle ammo Federal or or Hornady or surplus military.

Now, that's back when I could afford to be picky, and hopefully things will be back to normal before I have to go shopping. If you don't have reserves I'd just do a quick search to make sure it's some mainstream brand that somebody's heard of before and try it. :-)

The only ammo I have had a problem with is Remington Golden Bullet in .22LR. Everything else has gong bang when I pull the trigger. Now I have had different results when testing for accuracy. I have found that some will shoot a bit low, others a bit high from my Ruger GP100 in .357. I have not done any accuracy tests with my 9 or 22.

My advice, right now, buy what you can find, shoot it and have fun.

If you are looking for a self defense round, most of the current JHP rounds will work well . Find what cycles well in your gun and stock up on it.

Home Rolled is the best brand, cheapest too!

I have shot reloads to factory ammo. As long as I can hit my target, then its good.

In general, I like to buy Federal whenever I have a choice. Have been using Federal in .22LR, 9mm, and 12 gauge with no problems at all.

If you're looking specifically for 9mm recommendations, I think most brands work well. I've shot Federal, Blazer, Winchester, Remington, PMC, and reloads through my Sig and haven't had any problems.

I've never had good luck with S&B. But, I will caveat that with I primarily shoot my own reloads and very rarely buy commercial ammo except for HD ammo.
