Trouble with stuck case... Please help!

    Hello all,

Last night I was having a great time (not really) sizing .223 Remington fired cases with my Redding small base sizing die and my breech lock Lee press. Everything went well until the very last round (figures)... On the up stroke (pulling case back out of the die), I cranked down as usual, noticed a bit more drag and then the press handle flew forward... The rim of the case stripped completely from the case and the case is now stuck in the die.

Long story short, can someone suggest a stuck case remover that will work with the Redding dies? I was doing a little research online and apparently the Forster tool will not work with Redding dies that's why I'm asking. I cannot back the expander ball and spindle assembly complete out of the die; seems to be stuck right at the neck.

    Please help! Thank you.

Did it rip the whole head of the case off or just strip the rim to where a shell holder wont hold it? I got a case stuck in my Dillon die 3 nights ago and I unscrewed the decapping assembly out of the die put a drill bit through the top end and into the case. On the other end I took a small piece of metal tubing that supported the face of the die but was larger than the stuck piece of brass and put it into a bench vise and just pressed it out very easily. Im not sure how your redding die works but you might be able to to something similar and save yourself the money and time on a stuck case remover.

I couldnt get the expander out of the die very easily though and I just saw that you mentioned something about that. The neck of the case is all that is holding it once you screw it out as far as you can . I put the die in the bench vise with a rag to keep it from scratching and used rubber coated vise grips to pull out the decapping/ expander assembly.

Head is still there; just the rim ripped off so the shell holder won't hold it.

Just saw that Redding has a stuck case remover so will give that a look. Will try to unscrew the decapping assembly out tonight at the very least.

lol, i did the same thing the first time i was reloading. try what i did.

unscrew the decapp assembly, get a can of lube, either clp, wd40 or what i used was birchwood casey barricade, and spray the lube on the case from the bottom of the die, let it sit, then do it from the top and let it sit, then i took a phillips head screw driver, from the top of the die (the side the decapp assy. threads are on) insert the screw driver into the case and use a hammer to punch out the case from the die.

        Hope this helps.

Drill and tap it and toss it in the freezer for a while.

After screwing up a die or two, I'd be inlcined to make one attempt and then send it back to Redding. Also, place the can of Hornady One shot in the trash and order some Imperial Case Wax.

The Dillon .223 die I use has a stuck case remover built in. I learned it the hard way...

I insert them and remove them from the die.
I don't get them stuck though.

Buy a RCBS stuck case removal kit and follow instructions. It will take about 5 minutes to get it out without harming the die.

managed to back out the decapping pin last night but by doing so the expander ball unthreaded from the pin so it is rattling around inside the stuck case. I lubed the inside and outside of the stuck case through the opening in the die and tried to hammer out the case to no avail. I will go get the stuck case remover (Redding actually has one, go figure?!) and use it.

Thanks for the help guys! I have used Hornady one-shot with no problems so far, I just ran out this time so I substituted with CLP... Won't do that again...

LOL, the only time I got a case stuck was when I ran out of case lube and used KY jelly instead. Won't ever do that again, either.

If you ran out of KY gel, will you use your case lube instead??

                              Personally, I wouldn't.....
