Does this combo make any sense for .223 plinking?

Before this frenzy happened a friend sold me his complete reloading setup. I couldn't tell you a damn thing about it other than it was one hell of a price and everything i need.

Im looking to reload .223/9/40/45.

Right now id be thrilled with .223 and 9mm.

I don't have a manual yet and i see stocks dwindling more and more every second.

Is there anything info i could get that i could start trying to buy components as of right now while i wait for him to get back from vacation and ship the manuals and components to me? Id as him but he's out of the country.

Im just looking for plinking at this point.

even looking for primers im totally lost. Small Magnum rifle ive seen is used for .223? but then small rifle primers are as well? whats the point of magnum?

for a .223 am i looking at purchasing what is listed as .224 50gr Zombie max? Im only looking at the "Zombie" since it falls in the bullet weight im looking into.

Ultimately could someone suggest a "Type" of primer, popular powder and just a basic .223 bullet for plinking??? Im not looking for Match stuff right now, im just trying to be able to go shooting in the desert with friends.

I know this question has THOUSANDS of variables but there has to be a pretty all around powder and primer size out there right?

Im sorry for the completely noob question but my head is spinning reading all this. I learn by seeing it happen and discussing with people who know and reading it online with so many what seems like millions of opinions is just almost turning me off the idea of reloading LOL... It can't be this complicated right?

Small rifle primers will work fine ( CCI #400 or equivilant). As for powder aliant RL-10x will work fine, max grain load for that powder with that bullet size would be 23.5 gr according to my book

For a plinking 223 round I would look to H335 or Varget powders, just about any small rifle primer (not magnum) and buy your plinking bullets in bulk. Hornady has 55gr FMJ's, Midway and Midsouth sell a 50 or 55gr bulk soft point too.

The Wolf brand is where you would be getting the small rifle magnum ones.....other brands it would be just small rifle primers.

What city you in.....maybe someone closeby can lend you a manula to read in the meantime......

This could totally be a stupid question but in a perfect world im looking to load 9mm/40/45/.223.... Is there a powder that can do all that or is that a total joke?

Also, im seeing quantities of 1lb up to 8lbs for powder... how far does a pound of powder go? Im leery of buying the 8lb quantity since it seems like people go through many different types of powders before they find what works well with their rifles. SO im assuming its not possible but thought i would ask.

Last question is on a .223, is there a budget bullet brand out there for just plinking? Sure im seeing Hornady, Nosler, Barnes but is there a Wolf/ Tul-Ammo or Monarch?

Thank you guys for not ripping my head off. Once the crazy crap hopefully is behind us i do look forward to utilizing why i got a reloading setup which is for long rang precision work but right now im just focusing on ammo to just enjoy shooting since factory ammo is so scarce that its keeping me from going to the range so i don't deplete my ammo without being able to buy more

I'll do light varmint round if I'm not going for distance most of the ones I have right now are 75gr hpbt but I also have a couple hundred 55gr and about 100 45 gr for short distance plinking

I just bought 500 50gr Z-Max 223 bullets from Midway. I loaded them up using RCBS AR 223/5.56 dies with 26gr of Winchester 748 and a CCI #41 primer. Went to Field Time to try them out at 25 yards and was very please, while I am not the worlds best shot I could cover 5 shot groups with my thumb. They cycled great in my MP-15 Sport with 1/8 twist rifling.

Good god man, that would be some expensive plinking ammo... That stuff would definatley work though.

Where do you live? theres gotta be some place close buy you could buy some components at so you could at least save on hazmat.

I was at fowlers the other day and they had some powder and primers left, the prices suck but its better than paying hazmat on 1 pack of primers

If you live close by ill give you a pack of primers and a little bit of powder, your on your own for projectiles though

At the sake of sounding like a complete jerk I would pickup a book or two on reloading and read up on this a little more. I know it sounds like the canned answer, but it really has merit.

I used W231 for 9mm and 45ACP. H335 for 223.

My 8 lbs of H335 can reload about 2,200+ for 24.7 gr load.
8 lbs of W231 at 4.3 grs for 9mm is a lot. 1 lb is 7,000 grains, so 8 lbs is 56,000 grains.

Buy in small quantities first and find your load before buying 8 lbs.

Its hard to find primers, powders and bullets right now. I used powdervalleyinc but they're totally out of stock for what I need.

When I am letting my sons shoot my AR15 and just want plinking ammo, I let them use Wolf ammo. Reloading rifle cartridges is a lot of work and I don't think it is worth doing if all you use it for is 30 round mag dumps in the desert. I reload 9mm and 45ACP but I use lead bullets so it's pretty cheap and pistol ammo is much easier to reload.

My plinking ammo (always aimed shots) is Hornady 55 gr FMJ and H335. When I'm going for accuracy, I use a Hornady 68 gr HPBT and Varget.
