Rem 6 1/2 Primers in .223?

Can I safely load 55gr SP's with 20gr and use Rem 6.5 primers?

for range/plinking not hunting or match accuracy

The 6 1/2's were to be used with lower pressure cartridges like the 22 Hornet. I suppose you can use your load of 20 gr. of 3031, but if you're using a gas gun, it might not cycle the action, you can try it, I wouldn't try to hot rod it. For 223 in a gas gun though, you might have to use the proper primer.

I wouldn't do it..

the 6 1/2's are for the 22 hornet and M1 Carbine etc... The 6 1/2 has a thinner cup and you'd most likely have primer burn through

I use these in a .357 Contender after making the same mistake.

I destroyed an AR bolt using 6.5's, but that was at full .223 pressures. If you use them be very careful.

Ive been wondering this as well. I have a ton of these primers. According to the specs they are suppossedly identical to CCI 400's as far as cup thickness and I have loaded thousands of .223 for my AR with the CCI 400's without a single problem, what makes these any different? I have read all the horror stories so at first I wasnt even gonna mess with them, but with the complete lack of primers and the rediculous prices on gun broker im wondering what the deal is and having a problem connecting situation A to problem C. So the question is, if these are identical to CCI 400's why would these perform different or be more harmfull?
